Kongens Lyngby, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet Full time

Are you a highly competent, ambitious, and hard-working young scientist wanting to excel in the exciting field of gas fermentation in one of the best foundations and collaboration schemes to accomplish this? Then this advertisement is for you.

At DTU Chemical Engineering a PhD position is available in the frame of a research project funded by the Novo Nordisk foundation. The project addresses the main bottlenecks of gas fermentation technology, and it is within our ambitions that we overcome these through the design of a revolutionary, novel reactor type.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your overall focus will be to contribute to strengthen the department’s competences within gas fermentation technology. You will work with nearby colleagues and academic partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

Setting-up gas fermentation and bioelectrochemical conversion systems. Cultivating and enriching mixed microbial consortia on carbon dioxide. Investigating electron flow to final metabolic products under different operating conditions. Developing and testing new bioreactor configuration for carbon dioxide biological conversion. Modelling carbon dioxide fermentation. Contribute as teaching assistant to BSc and MSc courses and co-supervising BSc and MSc student projects.

Qualifications
In accordance with the abovementioned, you should have qualifications within several of the following areas:

Handling of pure and mixed microbial cultures under anaerobic conditions. Operating bioreactors in batch and/or continuous mode with suspended and/or attached growth (biofilm). Experience in gas fermentation. Experience in modeling biological processes. Experience in use of process simulation tools such as Matlab, Aquasim, Superpro Designer or similar.

Expertise within fermentation technology and/or gas fermentation should be documented with the Master/Bachelor thesis and/or relevant publications in international journals.

The project and co-supervision of the PhD student will be in close collaboration with personnel enrolled at DTU Chemical Engineering. Availability for a highly active period, openness, and willingness for a fruitful collaboration is a prerequisite. Also, you should be available to start the PhD project on the 15 August 2024.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by an evaluation committee headed by Associate Professor Hariklia Gavala.

We offer
