The change in rainfall patterns is one of the most prominent effects of global climate change, and in northern Europe, it will have severe impacts on the hydrological cycle and produce larger and more frequent flooding, changes in levels of groundwater and watercourses, longer drought periods, etc. Urban areas are especially vulnerable due to the economic, environmental, and health-related consequences of severe events and the necessity to adapt and mitigate climate changes. In the design and climate proofing urban hydrological systems (defined here as constructed drainage systems and the impacts from urban areas on natural systems), it is a precondition that rainfall is projected to represent future climate scenarios with space-time dynamics corresponding to the requirements of the application or system in question. The research project "UrbanRainChange"will improve resilient climate adaptation in urban water management by developing a framework for projecting changes in rainfall patterns at spatial and temporal scales that are critical to urban hydrology. A solution is pursued by constructing climate-adapted synthetic rainfall series with a data-driven stochastic rainfall generator, which combines advances in measuring rainfall in high resolution with weather radars, stochastic modeling, and climate forcing. The advantages of this approach in comparison with traditional downscaling of regional climate models are verified by targeted hydrological impact analysis.
The Urban Water research group at Aalborg University is leading in research on weather radar measurement of rainfall. Radar rainfall has some benefits in terms of measuring rainfall in high resolution in time and space which is relevant to pursue in the context of design rainfall for urban drainage systems. The integrated PhD scholar is part of the project "UrbanRainChange" granted by the "Independent Research Fund, Denmark", and you will work together with other scientific staff associated with the same project.
The PhD project includes:
- Spatiotemporal rainfall data development and analysis
- Development and validation of methods for climate projection of spatiotemporal rainfall series
- Hydrological impact analysis
The candidate should have experience with hydraulics, hydrology or urban drainage. Furthermore, excellent skills within mathematics, statistics, programming (Python, Matlab or other languages), and geographical information systems are expected. A high level of written and spoken English is a prerequisite.

Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who have not yet completed a Master's degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus, a prerequiste for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master's programme.
Stipends of this type consist of two parts: A and B. During part A, you are enrolled simultaneously in the Master's programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD grants per month (SU= The Danish students' Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK level). SU-PhD grants are paid for a maximum of two years.
When the Master's degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.
The integrated PhD stipend is open only for appointment with starting date 1 September 2024.
It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications, the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 15 December 2021 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
