QKD Test Development Engineer

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a secure communication method that leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to generate and distribute cryptographic keys. Unlike classical encryption methods, QKD provides future-proof security by allowing two parties to create a shared random secret key known only to them. This key can then be used for encrypting and decrypting messages, ensuring that eavesdroppers cannot gain knowledge of the key. The unique property of QKD lies in its ability to detect any third party attempting to intercept the key, thanks to the fundamental disturbance caused by quantum measurements. However, implementation side-channels can still be exploited to obtain knowledge on the key and QKD systems therefore have to be tested for their vulnerability to known side-channel attacks.
Within this position you will develop tests for implementation side-channels of QKD systems. Furthermore, you will support field demonstrations of QKD.
The position will be hosted by the Section of Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) at the Department of Physics of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). We are a dynamic, innovative and diverse research team focused on all aspects of CV-QKD. Our team is passionate about advancing secure communication methods based on quantum physics and bringing quantum key distribution to the people. We have a wide range of academic and industry collaborations, e.g. as part of the EU Flagship on quantum technology and the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure.
The job
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who will develop tests of implementation side-channels for continuous-variable and discrete-variable QKD systems and transfer them to our partners. Furthermore, your responsibility will be to support our team in field deployment of QKD systems and operation of field trials with external stakeholders.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The position is a part-time position (14.8 hours per week). The period of employment is 2 years. Starting date is 1 October 2024.
