Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut Full time
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and National Center for Climate Research (NCKF) opens a permanent full time position for a scientist to work with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) methods to develop algorithms using satellite observations.

DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including Sea ice, Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Surface Temperature for the Arctic Ocean and the North Sea/Baltic Sea region. We participate in the development of new satellite missions in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The satellite data-derived products are critical for understanding the effects of climate change and are important inputs to weather and ocean models as well as to DMI's ice service. Most of the work is carried out in projects financed by ESA, EUMETSAT, the EU's Copernicus Marine (CMEMS), Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the NCKF project.

Your main work will be to contribute and lead the development of new ML and AI algorithms within the use of satellite data to improve the satellite products and to enhance the uptake of satellite derived products. You will write peer reviewed publications and you will extend the use of ML/AI techniques to other fields of research at DMI.

You will work in close collaboration with dedicated and highly qualified scientist colleagues in the NCKF Satellites and the Arctic unit and from other units at DMI.

About the job The main working tasks will be:
  • Develop methods to integrate different types of satellite observations to improve the reliability of sea ice retrieval algorithms and to prepare for new satellite missions, such as the Copernicus expansion missions
  • Extend the ML/AI techniques to other fields of research within DMI, such as seasonal forecasting of sea ice extent and breakup, or detection of flooding extent from SAR data.
  • Participate in the development of the ML/AI based sea ice retrieval algorithms based on SAR and passive microwave observations.
  • Engage in and organize ML/AI knowledge sharing activities across DMI.
  • Suggest ML/AI student projects and participate in supervision of students. The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs approximately 80 scientists of which 19 are located in the Satellites and Arctic unit where this position will be placed. We have a strong international profile which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".

About you We expect that a succesfull candidate will have:
    • PhD degree in engineering, geophysics or similar within ML/AI and remote sensing
    • Expert on developing, optimizing and deploying Deep Learning based algorithms in operational context.
    • Experience with combination of different satellite products and development of gap free L4 satellite products using Deep Learning algorithms
    • Advanced programming skills in e.g. Python, Fortran or C++.
    • Experience with Linux and operational applications
    • Experience with using GPU facilities. About DMI DMI is part of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. DMI is the government's climate science advisor, creating and communicating knowledge about weather, climate and the sea to the Danish Realm. DMI's warnings, weather forecasts and services safeguard life and infrastructure and provide a basis for planning in a changing climate. As an authority on weather, climate and the sea, DMI provides meteorological services to the Danish defence, emergency preparedness as well as civil aviation and shipping in Denmark and Greenland. DMI is one of the oldest state institutions in Denmark and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022.

We have approximately 350 employees, most of whom work at DMI's new headquarters at Sankt Kjelds Gård in Østerbro. The new place have interior design that allows for an activity-based way of working.

Employment and salary Will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years.

For further details about the position, contact the head of the unit NCKF-Satellite and the Arctic: Jacob L. Høyer (telephone: or by e-mail: ).
