Research scientist: North Atlantic Ocean and climate dynamics

Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut Full time
The North Atlantic Ocean plays a pivotal role in the global climate system, influencing ocean circulation and climate variability on decadal and longer time scales. This research area holds significant importance at the National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) within the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI).

NCKF is opening a permanent, full-time position for a talented physical oceanographer/climate scientist with a keen interest in ocean dynamics and climate variability in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. As part of our research team in the unit for Global Climate in NCKF, the selected candidate will contribute to advancing our understanding of the meridional connectivity of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), including its interactions with the Arctic.

About the research Currently, our understanding of connectivity in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions is fragmented, primarily derived from ocean observational records such as transport mooring arrays and ocean reanalysis. This fragmented understanding poses challenges in making robust assessments of projections based on climate models. The research conducted will contribute to establishing a more cohesive framework for climate model evaluation. Additionally, it should aim to identify fingerprints of changes in regional exchange systems, thereby enhancing our ability to predict and understand climate dynamics. Exploring potential regime changes and investigating physical-based indicators of abrupt changes (tipping) in critical components of the circulation system is encouraged. We anticipate that observational-based data products, including ocean reanalysis, will serve as the foundation for initial research in this direction. The position also offers the possibility to engage in 1) the mainly sea ice based oceanographic fieldwork conducted regularly by the team in NW Greenland working out of the DMI arctic research station or 2) the climate modelling efforts making use of EC-Earth and planned contributions to CMIP7.

At NCKF, the successful candidate will be part of a strong team of ocean and climate modelers and climate scientists in the Unit for Global Climate at NCKF and will collaborate closely with the other units in NCKF, other departments at DMI and collaborators across Europe.

Requirements
  • Relevant PhD degree in ocean or climate sciences
  • Strong analytical and data handling skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise and a publication record in Atlantic/Arctic oceanographic research.
  • Participate in proposal writing and project development
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English. If non-Danish speaker, a wish to learn Danish within a few years.
  • Initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team. Additional Considerations:
    • Prior experience in ocean observing will be advantageous but not mandatory.
    • Expertise in ocean and/or climate modelling will be beneficial for further developing the position but not a requirement. About DMI and NCKF The position is in the NCKF department. NCKF conducts climate and operational research for the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and bring together knowledge to form the basis for safety at sea, green transition and climate adaptation. The activities include assessments of recent, present and future climate, short term forecast and analysis of the physical climate system with focus on the Arctic, Greenland. The research carried out in the department is based on both global and regional modelling as well as observations from remote sensing, in-situ measurements and fieldwork.

NCKF employs approximately 65 staff members - most of whom are researches including PhD students, junior and senior scientists. 20 staff members are located in the Unit for Global Climate at NCKF. NCKF also includes a number of project managers, administrative staff and generalists who work in close collaborate with colleagues in the other DMI departments. NCKF has a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in the use of both English and Danish as working languages.
