At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as PhD stipend is available within the general study program. The PhD stipend is open for appointment from 1 January, 2025 or soon hereafter. The employment is fixed for 3 years.

The position is offered in relation to the research program "Offshore Drones and Robots Research Group" and the PhD Student will be positioned in the "Esbjerg section".
This PhD project centers on leveraging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to optimize microbial fermentation processes. The research aims to tackle critical challenges such as microbial variability, sterility maintenance, and fluctuations in oxygen and nutrient supplies. The project involves developing sophisticated deep learning models to build accurate simulators and designing DRL algorithms for effective process control. The candidate will be responsible for data collection, preprocessing, and analysis, as well as training and validating models, and designing and optimizing DRL policies.
The applicant must provide and upload a proper project description, which describes the applicant's initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art (including a short list of references), a time schedule, and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives. The project description should have a length of 4-5 pages.
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate focused on leveraging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to enhance microbial fermentation processes. Responsibilities include developing and training advanced deep learning models and designing DRL algorithms for process control. Strong background in machine learning, deep learning, programming (Python), and experience with DRL are required. The ideal candidate should also know about time series modeling, language models (LMs), large language models (LLMs), control systems focused on DRL, optimization, data collection, sensing, and data analysis.

Salary and Career:
When pursuing a PhD at Aalborg University, you'll receive a stipend which includes both salary and pension benefits. The base salary starts at a minimum of 28,993.42 DKK before taxes, with an additional 17% added for pension contributions. However, the final salary can be negotiated based on your qualifications and experience.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications, the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
