About The Role
Renuw is a (very) early-stage start-up building a product for utilities and energy traders to offer premium electricity solutions to corporate customers by making Guarantees of Origin traceable and customizable. As the founding CTO, you will literally build the platform from the ground up together with me (August). I am looking for a 50/50 partner, and you will correspondingly get 50% equity.
Renuw - What Is It?
When 1MWh of green electricity is fed into the grid via green assets (wind, solar, hydro) a corresponding Guarantee of Origin (green certificate, GO) is issued. Utilities bundle these with regular electricity and sell them to private- and corporate customers as "green electricity" (you might have a such power solution yourself). Utilities make a pretty hefty margin on this product, as they often (but not always) claim these certificates for free from either their own assets or from their customer's assets - e.g. when utilities buy excess power from smaller solar producers.
So, what is the problem? Well, these GOs are bundled and sold to private- and corporate customers, but a bundle has zero inherent traceability or customizability. In other words, a 1MWh Guarantee of Origin might be from wind, solar, national, international, behind-the-meter, front-of-meter etc...
Why is that an issue? Corporations are increasingly demanding more transparency and traceability for their GOs. They need them for scope 2 emission reporting cf. CSDR, but it goes deeper than that. Large corporations want crucial ESG branding from sourcing their green power from local, decentralized producers, which can be used in internal- and external communication. This yields compliant Co2 reporting (no greenwashing risk), important ESG branding, valuable time-matching of consumption and production, and if done right, even a direct marketing channel to small asset owners.
Renuw is building the operating system for utilities and energy traders to launch a new, premium GO-backed electricity product to their ESG-hungry corporate customers. The product is still TBS (to be shaped), but the fundament has largely been laid.
Areas Of Responsibility
As Co-founder (CTO) the responsibilities will be many, but you can expect to:
- Lead the technical development of Renuw, building a high-impact operating system from the ground up
- Take responsibility for all backend and frontend development, where strong backend capabilities are highly valued
- Implement creative solutions and features based on customer feedback and future product changes
- Drive the implementation of in-house machine learning models (scikit or the likes) to cleverly allocate assets and GOs across different corporate customers of the utility/trader
- Develop and maintain APIs and customized dataflows between Renuw and the traders/utilities
- Take real ownership of the technical side of the platform like it is your own (wink: it IS yours). Expect to be very proactive and creative
What I Am Looking For
No educational requirements, but you must have a demonstrated record of building SaaS/OS or other IT applications, where you were the backend lead or at least an integral part of the development from the ground up. I prefer +3 years of relevant experience, but less can also suffice for the right candidate. Formally:
- Proactive and positive attitude - even when things are not working and all seems impossible
- Demonstrated history of working with back-end development, where you have taken real product ownership
- Comfortable with relevant tools and languages such as Python, Scikit, Pandas, AWS
- Preferably, you are both a strong backend engineer and a data/ML wizard
