Job Description
Join the Fermentation Cultures group at DTU BRIGHT to investigate traditional coffee fermentation and the microbial ecology underlying flavour formation.
Project Focus
The project integrates ethnographic research, systems biology, and collaboration with local coffee producers, universities, and the University of Cambridge to study how microorganisms originate and assemble, and how their interactions generate flavours.
Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and execute experiments, including metagenomics, metabolomics, and sensory analysis.
- Coordinate activities with group members and external partners.
- Perform bioinformatic analysis, data integration, and statistical analysis.
- Visualise results and communicate findings to diverse scientific audiences.
- Publish research findings in international journals.
- Plan and execute potential public engagement and outreach activities.
- Present work at international conferences and scientific meetings.
- Collaborate closely with researchers across disciplines and contribute to an open, collaborative research culture.
Qualifications
- Some experience in microbiology.
- Experience or interest in ethnographic research.
- Some experience in generating and analysing metagenomic and metabolomic data.
- A strong interest in microbial ecology, evolution, and flavour as a form of chemical communication.

Education Requirements
Must possess a two‑year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or an equivalent degree.
Salary & Appointment
Appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
Preferred Start Date
01.01.2027.
