Assistant Professor in Innate Immunity and Cellular Senescence at the Department of Biomedical Sciences

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic Assistant Professor for a 3-year position, to commence 1st of August 2025. The position is part of the EU Horizon-funded project POINT, which investigates the role of innate immunity and senescence in age-related diseases. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research in these fields while also engaging in teaching and supervision of students at the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMI).

Our Research
The research in the Desler Lab focuses on the interplay between innate immunity, cellular senescence, and metabolic dysfunction in the context of aging and disease. As part of the POINT project, we integrate molecular biology, bioinformatics, and advanced imaging techniques to unravel how these biological processes contribute to age-related diseases and inflammation. Our group fosters an interdisciplinary, international, and collaborative environment where innovation and teamwork drive scientific discovery.
Your Job
As an Assistant Professor in the Desler Lab, you will play a central role in the POINT project, contributing to both research and teaching.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Conducting and leading research in cellular senescence and innate immune signaling with a focus on cGAS-STING pathway regulation.
- Supervising and mentoring students from bachelor to PhD level, overseeing project design and execution.
- Teaching, including laboratory exercises and theoretical classes in courses related to but not limited to biochemistry and molecular biology.
- Developing assays, imaging techniques, and quantitative image analysis to assess immune responses and senescence in cellular models.
- Contributing to the writing of grant applications and scientific publications.
- Collaborating with international partners within the POINT consortium and beyond.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
Essential Experience and Skills:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- Extensive research experience in innate immunity and cellular senescence (qPCR, Senescence-associated-beta-galactosidase assays, Western blotting).
- Expertise in cGAS-STING signaling, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, and image analysis (QuPath, ImageJ).
- Experience in supervising students, guiding research projects and project management.
- Proven teaching experience, preferably in biochemistry or related fields, including laboratory-based teaching.
- Excellent scientific writing skills and a strong publication record.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken) and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Experience in writing proposals for and working in EU-funded Horizon and Widera research projects.
Desirable Experience and Skills:
- Experience with iPSC-derived cell models, and immune cell cultures.
- Familiarity with SOP write-up and GSP/GMP environments.
- Background in translational research.
Place of Employment
The place of employment is at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our facilities include modern laboratories with state-of-the-art imaging and molecular biology tools.
Terms of Employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years. The starting date is 1st of August 2025 or upon agreement.
Salary, pension, and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 18,07 % to your pension fund. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 38,700 DKK/approx. 5,100 EUR (April 2025 level).
Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark in the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
