Aarhus, Denmark Past Global Changes Full time
PhD position, Plio-Pleistocene climate and oceanography in the Arctic (PlioARC) - Aarhus, Denmark

Full details on the PhD position can be found here .

Description

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Geoscience programme. The position is available from May 2025 or later.

Tasks

The Ph.D. project will focus on climate and ocean circulation in the Baffin Bay and Northwest Greenland region during the Pliocene and the subsequent Early Pleistocene cooling. The Pliocene (5.3-2.6 million years ago, Ma) represents a warm climate similar to that which we may experience as early as the end of the century. The project aims to improve our understanding of the dynamics of Arctic climate change and its effect on ecosystems, using the Pliocene and the subsequent Early Pleistocene glacial onset as analogues. The material was collected during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 400 in 2023, and the work will thus be part of a large-scale international collaboration. The research of the Ph.D. student will especially focus on benthic foraminiferal assemblages, supported by existing and upcoming multiproxy and seismic data by collaborators. A part of this work will also involve comparisons to modern and Holocene conditions, with the possibility of including detailed analyses of Holocene sediments from the West Greenland shelf region. The position is part of the PlioARC project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) and the work will be carried out in an international research environment.

Requirements

Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree or at least one year of a Master’s degree in natural science, including but not limited to geoscience, biology, or ecology. Experience with micropaleontology (especially foraminifera) is highly advantageous, while knowledge of organic geochemistry, sea-going experience, and/or documented experience with (paleo-)environmental data is also an advantage. Applicants are encouraged to enclose a letter of interest stating their own motivation for the project and how their background and experience would fit into this project on Plio-Pleistocene Arctic paleoclimate and palaeoceanographic reconstruction.

Applications

For information about application requirements and mandatory attachments, please see the Application guide. Please read the Application guide thoroughly before applying. When ready to apply, go to this link (Note, the online application system opens 1 December 2024). Choose February 2025 Call with the deadline of 1 February 2025 at 23:59 CET.
