Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark DIS - Study Abroad in Scandinavia Full time
External Lecturer – Summer Interior Architecture Studio – DIS Copenhagen Join our Danish-American cultural exchange

Each year, more than 4.000 American bachelor students go on exchange in Copenhagen through one of our programs; the summer sees approximately 1.000 of those students. The faculty and staff at DIS do our best to make sure these students have the best possible experience academically and socially.

It is not only our students who keep us energized - as a teacher at DIS, you will join an interdisciplinary international network, which brings a special dynamic to our working day and fuels us all.

Summer Interior Architecture Studio runs from mid-June through the end of July 2025. The summer course teaching load includes 12 in-studio class days (four hours on each Monday, Wednesday and Friday), a full day for Final Presentations, and a concluding exhibition and social afternoon. Faculty must be present for all teaching hours.

Full teaching responsibility for the course will begin in the spring with summer course and assignment preparation. The right applicant has experience in Interior and/or Exhibition design, and also preferably some teaching or mentoring experience. Each member of the design faculty is responsible for a studio of approximately 10-12 Architecture and Design students from American colleges and universities. New faculty will work alongside and in regular communication with experienced colleagues to understand and be mentored in our pedagogical approach.

Course Description

Interior Architecture Studio focuses on interior architectural design in a Danish context and on developing a concept and project design within an existing structure. Students are tasked with creating a design concept that shapes interior space and user experience. Adaptive re-use and transformation features are among the prioritized challenges in which you will engage. Studio groups combine students of different levels and backgrounds. This course is taught vertically, and expectations relate to each individual student.

There are many reasons to teach at DIS, such as opportunities to:
  • Impact American students/future practicing professionals by sharing European approaches to and best practices
  • Work in an international, informal, and enthusiastic environment with emphasis on cross-cultural understanding, teamwork, innovation, and adaptability
  • Join our department team of architects, designers, historians and urban thinkers - as well as the broader DIS team of experts in a wide variety of fields
  • Develop interactive, experiential teaching skills and teaching experience in English
  • Expand professional networks in Scandinavia and in the USA
Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Plan and prepare the course and syllabus prior to the term start.
  • Teach at DIS Copenhagen two to four times per week. Teaching format includes studio time and lectures, experiential learning activities and field studies, especially to visit significant examples of relevant projects in Copenhagen.
  • Assess students' performance, grade assignments and provide feedback to students throughout the course
  • Participate in meetings/workshops aimed to develop pedagogical skills in line with the DIS teaching philosophy. We provide a series of introductory seminars, and you will be paired up with a mentor from our Architecture & Design faculty, whom you can consult for advice and guidance.
Professional competencies
  • Relevant background (architect, interior architect, exhibition designer, etc.) and hands-on expertise and experience with interior and/or exhibition design projects.
  • Candidate should be open to pedagogical and assessment support from DIS and capable of incorporating DIS' interactive and hands-on teaching philosophy into teaching practice.
  • Experience in creating a structured, interactive and safe learning environment is an advantage
