Department of Mathematical Sciences
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
The Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for positions as Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Associate Professor in the promotion program of Statistics. The application deadline is October 6, 2024, and the starting date is May 1, 2025, or as soon as possible after that, subject to negotiation.
We welcome applications in all areas of statistics, including applied statistics, statistical methodology, computational statistics, machine learning, and mathematical statistics.
The position may be applied for as a tenure-track assistant professor, associate professor, or associate professor in the promotion program. Please note that it is possible to apply at more than one level. If you apply at multiple levels, separate applications must be submitted.
Tenure-track Assistant Professor
The tenure-track assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations regarding publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching, with associated examination obligations within statistics. To a limited extent, the position may also include other duties.
The tenure-track assistant professor must have an academic standing that shows internationally competitive research and internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.
The assessment of applicants for the tenure-track assistant professorship will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding and outreach qualifications will also be considered. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and experience will be considered.
Associate Professor
Applicants are required to have university-level teaching experience and documented teaching competencies. They must also be able to explain and reflect upon their teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training program for assistant professors is required.
Duties include the applicant’s research, field development, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management, such as supervising and training research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.
The assessment of applicants for the associate professorship and the associate professorship in the promotion program will primarily consider their documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, and their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and outreach qualifications of applicants, including their ability to attract external funding, will also be considered.
The Tenure-track Assistant Program
The tenure-track program is a career program and an assigned mentor will provide the tenure-track assistant professors with guidance related to career development, other academic topics, and administrative procedures.
The performance of the tenure-track assistant professor will be followed via internal yearly evaluations and a mid-term and final international evaluation by an assessment committee. If the ‘final appraisal’ is positive, you will be promoted to associate professor. Performance and progression towards the criteria below will be evaluated, considering differences between research fields.
The Associate Professor Promotion Program
The University of Copenhagen offers particularly talented associate professors employment, with the possibility of entering into a promotion program that can lead to their employment as professors. To be employed as an associate professor in the promotion program, the candidate must qualify to work as an associate professor now and demonstrate the potential to transition into a professor position at the program’s end. Both will be assessed based on the merit criteria of the UCHP.
An associate professor is usually in the promotion program for at least two years and a maximum of eight years. During the program, the head of the department interviews the associate professor annually to assess whether the associate professor is “on track.” The program ends with a final assessment before the associate professor transitions to a professorship.
Terms of Employment
The position is open from May 1, 2025, or as soon as possible after that. The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. The terms of appointment and payment are based on the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Negotiation for a salary supplement is possible.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
