Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark DTU Management Full time

Are you passionate about solving complex real-world problems using data-driven methods? Do you want to push the boundaries of decision-making under uncertainty and healthcare analytics? Are you excited about developing new theory and methods with a firm basis on some of the most current application areas? If so, we invite you to apply for an Assistant Professor position at the Department of Technology, Management, and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Analytics encompasses a wealth of quantitative methods within data-driven decision-making. This includes operations research, mathematical modeling, optimization, simulation as well as machine learning and AI. This is our toolbox to solve complex problems and improve operational efficiency.

The Assistant Professor position is part of the DTU tenure-track system and you will be joining a talented and ambitious team at the heart of DTU's mission to develop and create value for the benefit of society. We are an internationally leading environment in analytics with ambitious goals concerning the development of theory as well as application-driven research.

The management and scheduling of scarce resources play a crucial role in addressing many societal challenges, significantly impacting both industry and society. Healthcare management and optimization under uncertainty present complex problems that are difficult to solve and challenging to isolate and decompose. Therefore, these are key research areas for the department and the Division of Management Science. Data-driven decision-making enables organizations to predict outcomes and optimize processes, leading to better resource allocation and improved performance.

The Department of Technology, Management, and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark and the country of Denmark can offer the successful candidates:

  1. A positive and international work environment with a flat hierarchy,
  2. a team-based and inclusive environment, and
  3. a universal health insurance as a resident of Denmark, including family members officially residing in Denmark.

Responsibilities and qualifications

As our new assistant professor, you will be instrumental in advancing our department's teaching and research in the field of analytics in this case specifically the two areas of decision-making uncertainty and healthcare analytics:

  1. Decision-making under uncertainty: Many important decisions are made under uncertainty, especially during the ongoing green transition, which requires significant societal investments in new energy modes, infrastructure, and technology. These decisions span long time horizons and face uncertainties in energy prices, demand, and production from renewable sources. This project aims to develop a new framework for investment decision-making under uncertainty, combining machine learning, algorithms and Operations Research. This position is connected to ongoing research in an ERC Advanced Grant. Professor David Pisinger is leading this area.
  2. Healthcare analytics: Your role will involve creating and investigating impactful digital decision support systems for healthcare services, focusing on outpatient care in rural and urban areas through digital technologies. Key research areas for this position will be mathematical modeling, optimization, simulation, and artificial intelligence, with the mission to enhance decision-making processes and improve healthcare delivery. The position is connected to ongoing research with our healthcare partners (e.g., Region Zealand). Professor Jens Brunner is leading this area.

For both positions we are looking for candidates with a PhD in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field .

You must have a demonstrated track record with publications in recognised journals based on experience in developing and applying advanced analytical methods. We focus on strong expertise in mathematical modeling, optimization, machine learning, and data-driven decision-making.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  1. Experience and quality of teaching
  2. Research experience
  3. Research vision and potential
  4. International impact and experience
  5. Societal impact
  6. Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  7. Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  8. Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

Starting date is 1 October 2025 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
