Kongens Lyngby, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

We are looking for a PhD candidate at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for the project MISSION-CCS (Material Science Innovation for Accelerated, Sustainable and Safe Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage). MISSION-CCS will train 13 Doctoral Candidate Researchers (DCRs) aiming to deliver the next generation of highly trained researchers and entrepreneurs in the field of material science, specifically focused towards accelerating the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies worldwide.

DCR4 in the MISSION-CCS project - a Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Networks Programme

The PhD project (DCR4) investigates impurities in the pure CO2 stream produced from CO2 capture. Small impurities will be carried into the transportation system, posing a safety and lifetime estimation risk to the system. The impurities are very corrosive, originating from the gas treatment system, which could include water content, amine impurities, nitrosamines, and residual gas content like NOx, SOx, CO, NH3, and similar types of traces. These components may react and produce even more corrosive components.

There is a need to expand the knowledge of impurities during transportation of compressed and liquefied CO2 under the impact of relevant impurities. The investigations must consider corrosion and lifetime estimation to qualify the materials used for the transportation of CO2.

Secondments to consortium partners are an essential part of the programme. The candidate will have secondments at the University of Leeds in the UK, Institut for Energiteknikk in Norway, and Wood group in the UK.

Responsibilities and qualifications

For applicants to the PhD positions, you must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in disciplines like chemical engineering, applied chemistry, petroleum engineering, or related disciplines.

The MSCA Doctoral Networks Programme further requires that all researchers recruited in MISSION-CCS must:

  • be doctoral candidates (i.e., not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment)
  • undertake transnational mobility - researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their date of recruitment.
  • Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
  • For all recruitments, the eligibility of the researcher will be determined at the date of their first recruitment in the action. This status will not evolve over the lifetime of the action, even if they are re-recruited at another beneficiary.

The preferred candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • A strong interest in experimental measurement
  • Experience with chemical analysis (to be specified) is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and phase equilibrium is an advantage.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Philip Loldrup Fosbøl.
