Aarhus, Denmark AAK AB Full time

Our story goes back more than 150 years, to the chilly southern coast of Scandinavia. From our early success in Sweden and Denmark, we’ve grown into the world’s leading specialist producer of plant-based oils, employing more than 4,000 people across the globe. We work with our customers to make the products you love even better. The oils we produce go into making your chocolate extra-creamy or putting the crunch into your croissant. And it’s not just food — we work across industries to make products that are higher quality, healthier and better for the planet.

Everything we do is about Making Better Happen.

AAK LOCATION

This position is based on site in Aarhus, Denmark.

About the role

Refining becomes more and more important in the fats and oils industry and has been included in AAK’s global strategy. To further strengthen our competitive edge, it is important to make sure we are updated on existing and emerging technologies within this field, including distillation, adsorption, surface chemistry and extraction. These processes rely heavily on physicochemical properties and therefore the job requires experimental lab/pilot scale work as well as modelling/simulation of the various processes.

As Research Scientist - Refining you will be a part of several projects, sometimes driven by yourself, within the field of vegetable oil refining. You will be responsible for evaluating and assessing existing processes to make sure they are optimized and capture the complexities of our different factories. The work will include testing and simulating the processes in our pilot plant to get a more theoretical approach to optimizing said processes. Furthermore, you will be spending time screening the technology landscape for new processes and technologies and for those deemed interesting you will be assessing their effectivity and feasibility for AAK in the search for more targeted and effective refining methods. Your main contacts internally will be your peers in the Product and Technology Development Team as well as the production engineers on our different factories across AAK globally. Some travel activity must be expected. You will be reporting to AAK’s Process Development Manager who’s responsible for global process development within the company. Together you will ensure that AAK’s purpose, making better happen, becomes a reality and new solutions and improvements are implemented continually.

Responsibilities

  • Driving/collaborating in several projects via our Stage Gate Process.
  • Act as the AAK expert within the scientific area, keeping yourself up to date on emerging and existing technologies within fats and oils refining.
  • Continuously improving existing and new processes via experiments and modelling/simulations.
  • Supporting/leading startup of new projects internally or with external collaborators to screen new technologies.
  • Scaling up new processes together with the process engineering teams in AAK.

About you

  • Possess an MSc in Chemical or Process Engineering.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in process optimization and/or modeling, or alternatively, hold a PhD in Chemical or Process Engineering.
  • Thrive in global project teams focused on optimizing unit operations.
  • Display curiosity and enthusiasm for new and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrate passion for delivering high-quality results.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Available to travel to AAK locations in Europe and occasionally industry events.
  • You can work 4 days per week at the Aarhus office, 1 day per week from home.

In return AAK offers

  • Join a pioneering company in specialty oils and fats, driving innovation and sustainability.
  • In AAK you can work across 25+ countries, gaining international exposure and collaborating with a diverse team.
  • AAK invests in your development with training, mentorship, and clear career paths.
  • You will contribute to a greener world with AAK's sustainability-focused approach.
  • Join a diverse and inclusive workplace that values every individual's perspective and talents.
