Academic Researcher in European Studies
The Department of Political Science and Public Management at the University of Southern Denmark is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team as an academic researcher in European studies.
As a PhD student, you will be affiliated with the Centre for Border Region Studies (CBRS), a research institution located in Sønderborg. The CBRS promotes comparative aspects of European border regions in research, teaching, and dissemination.
The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background and be able to outline an original research project. The project should be related to the ongoing research areas within at least two of the three core areas of the CBRS: Border Studies, European Studies, and the local (Danish-German) region.
We are particularly interested in proposals focused on territorial conflicts in Europe and contemporary (in)security. The successful candidate will be expected to generate new research ideas, work independently, and prioritize different aspects of the PhD plan, including participation in PhD courses, teaching, and supervision of undergraduate students.
Additionally, the candidate will be required to apply for smaller grants and/or participate in applications for larger grants. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with the national and international research community are essential.
The department believes in fostering a stimulating and inspiring environment for both faculty members and students. We are committed to recruiting, developing, and retaining talented scholars committed to academic excellence and departmental development.
The scholarship carries a monthly salary, including pension, office facilities, and financial support for conference travels and research visits abroad. Conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
As a PhD student, you will follow an individual PhD plan, which includes course work, conference participation, and teaching. You will typically spend one semester at another research institution, often abroad.
The Department of Political Science and Public Management offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment that combines research, teaching, and dissemination. We believe in fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and intellectual curiosity.
The position requires a Master's degree (the 5+3 program) or a bachelor's degree plus 60 ECTS of their master's program by February 1, 2025 (the 4+4 program). Applications are invited from candidates who meet these requirements.
A 5+3 PhD program spans over three years, while the 4+4 program runs for four years. If enrolled in the 4+4 program, you will be enrolled in the PhD program and the master's program parallel to each other.
