Orbex is seeking a highly skilled Rocket Propulsion Systems Engineer to join our team in Copenhagen, Denmark. As a key member of our propulsion engineering team, you will be responsible for the design, development, and testing of our launch vehicle propulsion systems.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop propulsion systems, including main stage propulsion, turbo-machinery, ignition systems, and RCS implementations.
- Support component and integrated level testing, including definition of test plans, test procedures, data analysis, and reporting.
- Collaborate with senior engineers on propulsion systems physical modeling, including CAD and CFD modeling.
- Liaise with suppliers and ensure quality assurance of produced propulsion system components and parts.
- Develop assembly and operational procedures for propulsion systems AIT in collaboration with propulsion systems technicians.
- Prepare design and test documentation and participate in design reviews.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering or a related field.
- 3+ years of industry experience in propulsion development or a related field.
- Proven aptitude for core engineering disciplines such as thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural analysis, etc.
- Experience with full development process from requirements, detailed design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
- Liquid or hybrid rocket engine propulsion design and development experience.
- Experience with rocket engine or turbomachinery qualification testing, operations of ground support equipment, and test data analysis.
- Experience with detailed mechanical design with SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar CAD tool.
- Strong proven knowledge of manufacturing techniques commonly applied in rocket propulsion technology, specific emphasis on additive manufacturing desired.
- Experienced in GD&T, Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Hand Calculations.
- MS Office tools, full proficiency expected.
- Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English.
- Masters degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Designs for cryogenic fluids, including liquid oxygen.
- Turbo-machinery design and operations preferable.
- Practical, hands-on experience testing and validating designs against specific criteria rather than purely conceptual design.
- Experience with programming tools such as Matlab, Python, etc.
- Experienced with typical rocket engine performance modeling tools (e.g. CEA, RPA, EcosimPro, etc.) would be beneficial but not essential.
- Experience with numerical simulation tools (e.g. ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent, Abaqus, OpenFOAM).
- Experience using ERP or PLM software.
- Self-starter mentality with good leadership qualities.
- Flexible and dedicated mindset.
This role is based in Copenhagen at Orbex's Danish propulsion engineering and manufacturing site. You will be spending time both at the factory and our nearby rocket engine testing site, with occasional travel to our main factory, test and launch sites.
You must be a UK or European citizen, or from a country that is a signatory to the MTCR convention.
