Evaluating Multimodal Health Data: A PhD or Postdoc Position
2 weeks ago
We invite highly motivated individuals to apply for a PhD or 2-year postdoc position at the IT University of Copenhagen.
Project OverviewThe project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Data Science Ascending Investigator grant titled CHEETAH, led by Associate Professor Veronika Cheplygina.
Machine Learning Challenges in HealthcareMachine learning competitions often face limitations in real-world applications. For example, detecting lung cancer in chest images can result in similar algorithms that excel on specific accuracy metrics but fail to generalize to diverse data.
An insufficient single performance metric like accuracy can lead to too similar algorithms that do not bring added value despite their high training costs and carbon footprint. Moreover, competition may deter underrepresented groups in computer science from entering or staying in the field.
Research Objectives- Design competitions with multiple metrics
- Evaluate and increase diversity of evaluation data
- Evaluate similarity of algorithms
- Develop methods to combine and reuse algorithms for increased robustness without disproportionate carbon footprint
We will focus on two multimodal disease prediction data: chest x-rays with radiology reports and retinal images with tabular clinical measurements.
