Frederiksberg, Frederiksberg Kommune, Denmark KU - SUND - PANUM KBH N Full time
Research Focus

This PhD project aims to investigate the role of Escherichia coli diversity and its relationship with gut microbiota disturbances in enteric diseases of young piglets and calves. The successful candidate will leverage advanced metagenomic techniques to characterize abundance, diversity, and virulence of E. coli lineages and their interplay with the gut microbiota during disease development.

Methodology:
  1. Collection and analysis of faecal and intestinal samples from diseased and healthy animals
  2. Use of advanced metagenomic techniques to characterize E. coli lineages and their interactions with the gut microbiota
  3. Investigation of the role of E. coli in gut microbiota disturbances (dysbiosis)
  4. Characterization of the relationship between E. coli diversity and disease onset

Key Criteria for Assessment

The assessment of applicants will be based on their academic qualifications, research experience, and relevant skills. The following criteria will be taken into account:

  • Qualifications corresponding to a master's degree related to the subject area of the project
  • Documented experience with core microbiology techniques
  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Previous publications and presentations
  • Relevant work experience
  • A curious mind-set with a strong interest in microbiology and bioinformatics
  • Fluency in written and oral English

About the ProjectEnterotoxin-producing E. coli (ETEC) has traditionally been considered one of the primary causes of enteritis in young piglets and calves. However, recent studies suggest that additional factors contribute to disease onset. This PhD project aims to investigate the role of E. coli in gut microbiota disturbances using faecal and intestinal...
