Senior Researcher in Italian Studies at Syddansk Universitet

The Department of Culture and Language at SDU is seeking a highly skilled postdoctoral researcher with expertise in memory studies, activism, and Italian Studies. As part of the research project Revival of Traumatic Pasts, you will investigate the growing awareness of problematic colonial pasts in Germany and Italy and explore how literary writings and activism promote this development.

Specifically, your work package will focus on reordering the urban imaginary in Italian cities by key activists and political actors, discussing its relevance for the debate on Italian identity. Drawing on fieldwork observations and interviews, you will analyze the interplay and conflict of memory discourses between diverse agents, highlighting how they sustain, reclaim, or entangle memories of Italy's fascist and colonial past with varying power capacities.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team supervised by Associate Professor Anne Folke Henningsen, Associate Professor Pia Schwarz Lausten, and PI Jessica Ortner. This collaboration will allow you to leverage your knowledge and skills in Italian language, literature, and cultural studies to contribute meaningfully to the project's goals.

The position is a fixed-term appointment lasting 2 years, commencing on March 1, 2025, or after agreement. The employment will be terminated automatically at the end of the period.

The salary for this position is estimated to be around DKK 54,700 per month, considering the location in Odense, Denmark, and the standard compensation structure for postdoctoral researchers in Denmark.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A PhD in Cultural Studies, Italian Studies, anthropology, ethnography, or history with a strong focus on memory studies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Very good or near-native skills in the Italian language.
  • Experience in investigating urban settings, preferably with a focus on Italy.
