PhD Scholarship in Satellite Remote Sensing and Emissions Monitoring
22 hours ago
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) in the field of satellite remote sensing and greenhouse gas emissions monitoring. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that combines satellite-based GHG observations and ground-truth emission verification.
The PhD student will be responsible for developing and validating digital solutions for automated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission monitoring combining satellite data and ground-based observations. This includes retrieving large quantities of acquired satellite observed GHG concentration data, developing methods to consolidate satellite measurements to an overarching and analysable dataset, and verifying satellite-based atmospheric GHG column concentration retrievals and satellite-based emission estimates using GHG concentrations and fluxes from tall monitoring towers located in Denmark.
The project aims to investigate how we can use satellite remote sensing data to monitor greenhouse emissions in Denmark and bridge expertise from DTU Space and DTU Sustain. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with applications of multi-spectral satellite data that can enable a GHG detection tool with national coverage and high temporal and spatial resolution.
The PhD student will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure. The project supports the development of space technology and digital data processing that can be used in a range of different applications among others for documentation of GHG emissions from nature and the technosphere and associated mitigation actions.
Responsibilities and Qualifications- Develop and validate digital solutions for automated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission monitoring combining satellite data and ground-based observations.
- Retrieve large quantities of acquired satellite observed GHG concentration data and develop methods to consolidate satellite measurements to an overarching and analysable dataset.
- Verify satellite-based atmospheric GHG column concentration retrievals and satellite-based emission estimates using GHG concentrations and fluxes from tall monitoring towers located in Denmark.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, computer science, or physics.
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or R.
- Experience with analysis of satellite data or other large datasets.
- Knowledge about satellite remote sensing preferably with multispectral data.
- Knowledge about GHGs, Earth atmosphere, and atmospheric modelling.
