Propulsion Design Expert for Turbomachinery Systems

Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark NewSpace Technical Full time

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Propulsion Design Engineer to drive the development of turbomachinery systems for an advanced space launch system. This role focuses on mechanical design and development of turbopumps, rotodynamic components, and other propulsion elements.

The Role

Your primary responsibility will be to lead the preliminary and detailed design of turbomachinery components, ensuring robust end-to-end development from concept through to testing and optimization for flight readiness. The role emphasizes the mechanical aspects of turbomachinery design, including CAD and GD&T, rather than theoretical simulations or modeling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop turbomachinery systems (pumps, turbines, and rotodynamic components) for propulsion purposes.
  • Create detailed CAD models and technical drawings compliant with GD&T and manufacturing standards.
  • Perform structural, thermal, and fluid dynamic analysis using tools such as ANSYS (or equivalent).
  • Define and implement test plans and procedures; analyze test data and generate comprehensive reports.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure manufacturability and quality assurance, particularly for additively manufactured components.
  • Develop assembly and operational procedures for testing and integration.
  • Participate in design reviews and manage multiple concurrent projects with shifting priorities.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and development of propulsion or turbomachinery systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA) and technical drawing generation.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and structural analysis.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing techniques, particularly additive manufacturing.
  • Experience in design documentation, test data analysis, and designing for manufacturability.
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Master's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience designing turbopumps or cryogenic fluid systems for rocket engines.
  • Expertise in mechanical design of rotating turbomachinery elements (e.g., impellers, turbines, shafts, seals).
  • Knowledge of rocket engine or turbomachinery qualification testing and ground support operations.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, DFM (Design for Manufacture), DFA (Design for Assembly), and performing hand calculations.
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids (e.g., liquid oxygen) and industry standards (ECSS, NASA-STD).
  • Practical experience testing and validating designs.

You thrive in a fast-paced environment where innovation and initiative are essential. You're proactive, a strong communicator, and comfortable collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.

This role is based at our Copenhagen, Denmark, propulsion engineering and manufacturing site. On-site work is required due to the nature of the position.

Eligibility

Applicants must be UK or EU citizens or from a country that is a signatory to the MTCR convention. Successful candidates may be subject to a BPSS check, including a criminal record check.
