Experienced medical physicist for dept. of Oncology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark

We have an opening for an experienced medical physicist for in section of radiotherapy at Dept of Oncology Rigshospitalet. The opening is with starting date January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

The job as medical physicist at Rigshospitalet is diverse and will include both clinical duty on call, dose planning, routine quality assurance tasks and development and quality assurance related to implementing new techniques and equipment. Rigshospitalet is a large tertiary hospital and within radiotherapy we offer both high volume treatments, such as breast and prostate cancer, as well as rare indications, including total skin irradiation with electrons, total body irradiation etc.

Dose planning is primarily carried out by a dedicated team of dose planners, typically with training as radiographers, but medical physics is expected to support the group as needed.

We have a very high level of ambition in both daily treatment planning and delivery. We prioritize research and development, and the expectation is that we can continue to offer state-of-the science treatments at a high international level and contribute positively to the national collaborations in oncology and radiotherapy. The demographic pressure implies that a particular challenge is to accommodate this ambition within the constraint of personnel resources. Automations and resource optimizations are therefore an integrated part of the research and development strategy.

The department equipment includes 3 Truebeam acceleratorers with high-definition MLC designed for stereotactic radiotherapy and 4 Truebeam accelerators with conventional Millenium MLC. One Halcyon machine and 2 Ethos machines are also available, all equipped with the Hypersight imaging package. In addition, we have an MR linac from ViewRay systems that is operated as a service with virtual availability from Herlev Hospital. We offer brachytherapy, including gynecological service and plaques for eye melanoma. The diagnostic imaging service in the department include a 3T Vida MR scanner and two Siemens Go-open Pro scanners under installation. We have a close collaboration with dept. of nuclear medicine with availability of PET/CT and PET/MR scanning. In 2024 we delivered 44,727 radiotherapy fractions to 4,364 targets in 3,600 patients.

If you join our team, you will become part of a dynamic group of 17 medical physicists (some with part time research funded positions). In addition, 8 dose planners, 2 IT staff, 5 accelerator technicians and 13 radiographers in scan/mould tasks form the section of medical physics. Daily work is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary with clinical oncologists and radiographers and nurses trained in treatment delivery. The entire section of radiotherapy has approximately 100 staff and works closely together with a research section with physicists, medical doctors, computer scientists and engineers.
