PhD Project in Oxidation of Biogenic Emissions
Department of Chemistry
Faculty of SCIENCE
University of Copenhagen
Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Atmospheric Chemistry. The project is a part of a research project on Oxidation of Biogenic Emissions from Boreal Forests, which is financed by a Inge Lehmann grant to Assistant. Professor Olga Garmash from The Independent Research Fund Denmark.
Start date is 1 February 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
The research project evolves around the emissions of organic compounds from Boreal Forest and their gas-phase reactions in the atmosphere at different environmental conditions. We use experimental techniques to study the oxidation processes in the field and then simulate real atmospheric processes in laboratory chambers. The successful candidate will analyze the samples collected during summer 2025 in North American Boreal forest and lead laboratory experiments applying highly sensitive mass spectrometry to detect highly oxygenated organic compounds and accretion products. This project is a part of the large collaboration with other grops from Finland, Canada, US, and Switzerland which provides excellent opportunities for an exchange stays.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science with knowledge of atmospheric chemistry. The applicants can have background in plant emissions, organic gas-phase oxidation, atmospheric mass spectrometry or other relevant fields of atmospheric chemistry.
Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The successful candidate will be a part of a group led by Assistant Professor Olga Garmash. In the group, we integrate laboratory and field measurements of atmospheric composition to understand the chemical reactions that lead to the formation of particulate matter in urban and remote environments. We are a newly established international research group currently consisting of three people. Our group has a wide international collaboration and access to state-of-the-art facilities. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions and foster an inclusive, supportive and team oriented work environment. Further information on the group is linked at
The group is a part of Physical Chemistry Section, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located at Universitetsparken 5, 2100 Copenhagen. Further information on the Department is linked at
