Postdoc in Behaviour Modelling in Mobility Demand Management Schemes
3 days ago
We are inviting applications for a part-time 2-year postdoctoral researcher to join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team and work at the intersection of behavior modelling, machine learning, and policy foresight. This position focuses on the development of travel behavior models sensitive to new pricing and tradable credit schemes for future demand management of urban mobility systems.
You will be affiliated with the Intelligent Transport Systems section at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) of the Technical University of Denmark. The position is part of a larger EU project entitled "
FEDORA - Federation of network optimization services, simulation foresights, and data alchemy for adaptable, agile, secure, and resilient multimodal traffic management
", funded by the EU Commission's Horizon Europe Framework.
The successful candidate will work on two integrated research agendas:
- Explore traditional and machine-learning based techniques in activity-based demand models sensitive to pricing and quantity control mechanisms.
- Support field behavioral experiments and behavioral model estimation on tradable mobility credits.
FEDORA aims to pave the way towards advanced traffic and network management through the development of a federated spaces platform offering a holistic framework of innovative solutions and services that enable precise and pro-acting sensing of supply and demand, facilitate optimal operation of transport services, and advances learning and evolution in complex environments. The project focuses on six thematic mobility management demonstrations in Vienna, the Basque country, Reggio Emilia, Nicosia, Budapest and Denmark, covering varying EU urban and rural contexts, infrastructure maturity levels, multimodal mobility services availability, organization/operational structures and social conditions. Within FEDORA, this post-doc position is focused on the development of a flexible travel behavior in complex multimodal urban environments, including Mobility as a Service, Dynamic Pricing, and Tradable Mobility Credits, sensitive to diverse user groups, including low-income, low-accessibility factors. Experiments tailored for the Regio Emilia pilot will be designed, and carried out, together with a PhD student already working on the project. Data will then be used to estimate behavioral models and integrated into an activity-based models for scenario analysis.
The successful candidates will work under the supervision of Associate Professors Carlos Azevedo and Ravi Seshadri. The Intelligent Transport Systems Section belongs to the Transportation Science division of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) at DTU. The division conducts research and teaching in the field of traffic and transport behavior and planning, with particular focus on behavior modelling, machine learning and simulation.
Responsibilities And Qualifications
Your overall aim will be to strengthen the department's competences within the application of advanced methods for activity-based simulation models and machine learning methods in transportation. You will work in close collaboration with colleagues, and with academic partners in Europe. Your primary tasks will involve formulating, estimating, and testing demand / choice models, implement them in a complex agent-based simulation framework and apply and calibrate them for the Greater Copenhagen Area.
- You will support field behavioral experiments to test designs of tradable credits schemes in specific urban contexts.
- You will explore and implement machine-learning algorithms and classical dynamic models for hierarchical and sequential decision making.
- You will collaborate with domain experts across transport modeling, machine-learning, and policy design to ensure scientific and practical relevance.
- You will contribute to the open-source codebase and documentation for future reuse by the research and policy community.
- You will publish the new findings in the international peer reviewed literature.
- You will present your research at project consortium meetings and international conferences.
- You will communicate effectively with colleagues and be able to work as part of a team to achieve ambitious goals.
- You will be responsible for project milestones and deliverables.
- Teach and supervise graduate student projects
For this position, experience with simulation development and coding is essential. We expect the candidate to have:
- PhD in transportation science, machine learning, behavioral economics or a related field.
- Programming skills Python, along with experience working with transportation simulation frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of probabilities and statistics.
- Experience in design and deployment of behavioral experiments and/or survey travel data collection in the field.
- Demonstrated the ability to publish in the international peer-reviewed research literature
- Proven ability to work on interdisciplinary projects and communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- The ability to work in a project team and to take responsibility for their own research goals and project tasks.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills and proficiency in English.
Preferably, We Are Also Looking For Someone With
- Experience with mobility simulation tools such as MATSim, SUMO, or similar platforms.
- Prior work involving model calibration, optimization under uncertainty, or scenario analysis.
- Demonstrated interest in contributing to the field of policy making supported by simulation models
