About the Role

Our team is designing and building the Unified Deployment Engine, a system responsible for orchestrating the safe rollout of changes throughout all stateless services, 40+ Stateful Technologies (MySQL, Schemaless, Cassandra, etc), OSS K8s operators, thousands of configurations, all changes that support and power the entire Uber product.

Our platform is designed to enforce rollout policies, gather signals and enable lockdowns, ensuring that changes are rolled out incrementally, safely and reverted if signals suggest a potential issue.

The scale we operate is significant:

  • 5000 microservices deployed 750,000 times weekly
  • 25 storage technologies across 3.8 million containers, running on over 100,000 hosts

Our work directly impacts operational excellence, developer velocity, and overall system reliability at a global scale. Reliability is of the utmost importance. Our systems impact daily 33M+ Uber trips.

What You Will Do

  • Build elegant backend platform components for high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems.
  • Build the deployment system for safe deployment of open source k8s operators.
  • Establishing a common model for incremental rollouts, enabling higher-order reasoning for automated decision-making, and ensuring critical safety features like rollbacks;
  • Lead and collaborate with team members to maintain system health, ensure code hygiene, refactor, and enhance system robustness and resilience.
  • Promote best practices in code health, testing, and maintainability.
  • Work with motivated and curious teammates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

What You Will Need / Bonus Points

Basic Qualifications

  • Coding Skills: Proficient in writing clean, well tested and elegant code.
  • Architecture: Understanding of distributed systems architecture, including consensus, convergence, data consistency, and performance/efficiency constructs. Ability to identify and resolve performance and scalability issues.
  • Experience: Proven experience building large-scale distributed systems with landed impact.
  • Project Management: Ability to work independently and lead projects, from scoping requirements to launch.
  • Continuous Learning: Strong desire to learn, grow, and build best-in-class systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Solution Design: Lead the design of reliable solutions for business use cases in highly distributed systems.
  • Software Engineering: experience with the k8s ecosystem and infrastructure systems;
  • Problem Solving: Ability to identify and resolve performance and scalability issues within their team.
  • Implementation: Implement solutions in Go, focusing on clean, readable code with unit and integration test coverage, and running it in production.
  • Communication: Effective communication and collaboration skills, be a strong team player.
