Software developer for Public Heath Bioinformatics

Your new role and impact

As a software developer at the Sequencing and Bioinformatics department at SSI, you will help drive and implement the development of our data processing pipelines for public health surveillance. You will be working with a dedicated team to develop, deploy and maintain both the software and workflow framework for processing of biological sequence data into useful representations for public health decisions.

About our work and your role in it

You will join our bioinformatics team, developing and maintaining analytical tools and pipelines that support public health work. Our tools are primarily built in Python, and experience with Python package development is expected. Knowledge of Jupyter notebooks, Snakemake, Galaxy, or IRIDA is an advantage.

We manage our code using Git and GitHub ), so experience with version control is required. The work mainly takes place on Linux-based HPC systems operated by our bioinformatics team; familiarity with Linux is expected, and HPC experience is a plus.

You will collaborate closely with a team of over 20 bioinformaticians, developers, and system administrators. Experience with Software architecture, bioinformatics, public health and project management are valued additions.

About you

You have an academic background, for example in programming or engineering with strong skills in software development.

About the Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics

The Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics at Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is central to Denmark's infectious disease preparedness, with shaping and building key IT infrastructure, cutting-edge sequencing laboratories, surveillance activities, and translational research capabilities. Our interdisciplinary team works at the forefront of bacterial genomics, pathogen surveillance, and microbial ecology.

About the workplace and SSI

We are a family friendly workplace with a 37-hour working week incl. lunch break. In addition to this, we have an active sports association (IK-SERA) with exercise rooms, a staff association and an affiliated kindergarten. We are in central Copenhagen with good public transport options (bus and metro).

This position is not remote; you'll be expected to come to the office though we can offer flexible working conditions.
