Assistant Professor of Oxygen and ion dynamics during functional hyperemia and brain states

København, Denmark Københavns Universitet Full time

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher at the level of assistant professor for a 2-year position to commence 1 April 2023 or after agreement.

The position focus on the research of how astrocytes regulate blood flow during functional hyperaemia.

Information on the department can be found at: .

Our research group
Center for Translational Neuromedicine currently has 50 employees and students and is divided into 3 labs. CTN is characterized by a highly ambitious research environment. The PhD Fellow will be part of the Nedergaard lab, primarily.

Being part of the Nedergaard lab offers an opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary lab engaged in neuroscience with a focus on the basic biology of glial cells in the CNS and the role of astrocytes in several neurological diseases, including stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, tremor, and ALS. Research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target astrocytic dysfunction.
CTN is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and is located at Panum. The Center comprises modern laboratories and excellent facilities within neuroscience. The project that we are recruiting for focuses on glial and vascular dynamics driving fluid fluxes in the rodent brain using multiple optical imaging approaches.

Your job
Neuronal activity in the brain comes along with increased local metabolic demand. Focal neuronal excitation leads to local increase of blood-flow in the neighboring capillaries which serves as a source for oxygen and glucose to fuel the cells metabolism, a concept termed functional hyperemia. Despite decades of research little is yet known about the regulation. We seek a candidate that can investigate how astrocytic ionic composition during functional hyperemia is modulated and connected to tissue oxygenation and blood flow.

Your tasks would be to set up and perform in vivo fluorescent imaging in head-constraint and freely moving behaving and sleeping mice and measure the levels of neurotransmitter, ion and anion changes as well as tissue oxygenation and blood flow during the different sleep phases as well as sleep-wake transitions and behavior states. Also, you are expected to train and mentor students at Master level.

The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

research, including publication/academic dissemination duties research-based teaching sharing knowledge with society

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

You have a PhD in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, Biophysics, or equivalent You are highly experienced in in vivo fluorescent imaging and rodent microsurgery. You are highly experienced in maintaining and adapting microscope systems for in vivo imaging. You have an active interest in the neuro-glia interaction during awake and sleep conditions. Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

Knowledge on in vivo imaging Knowledge on microscopy systems with the ability to build them (, two-photon, IOS, Laser Speckle Contrast, Widefield) Experience on optogenetics, fluorescent biosensors Experience on blood flow imaging (Laser Speckle Contrast, Intrinsic Optical Imaging) Experience on in vivo microelectrode measurements Experience on local infusion of drugs Knowledge on genetically encoded indicators and sensors Knowledge on transgenic mouse models relevant to glia biology Knowledge on technologies related to studying fluorescent signalling in freely moving mice. Experience on training of students

Place of employment

The place of employment is at Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment.

Terms of employment

The employment as assistant professor is a full time and fixed-term position for 2 years. Starting date is 1 April 2023 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
