Postdoc in Networks of Expertise of the green transition

Kgs Lyngby, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

Are you establishing your career as an STS-scholar and interested in engaging with the energy transition? If yes, we have the job for you. In the ERC-project ‘Good-by-Devicing’ you will help break new ground in collaboration with a research team in the Society, Market and Policy Section, DTU.
If you are establishing your career as a social scientist within Science & Technology Studies (STS) and interested in engaging with cutting-edge engineering sciences in the realm of the energy transition, it is right here in front of you. At DTU Wind and Energy Systems, in the Society, Market and Policy Section (SMP), you will as a postdoc break new ground together with the STS-based research team working on the excellence project ‘Good-by-Devicing – probing how value comes to matter in the energy transition’ funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Responsibilities and qualifications
As postdoctoral researcher in the ERC project “Good-by-Devicing – probing how value comes to matter”, you will be involved in establishing a new ‘sociology of devicing’ within STS, at the intersection of Valuation Studies, The Good Economy, and Networks of Expertise.

The focus of the ERC-project project is to offer a new understanding of how, and by whom and with what devices, energy islands in Denmark (in the North Sea, and Baltic Energy Island Bornholm) have become valued and qualified as ‘good’, and with what consequences for whose concerns and values are being included/excluded in the design of the energy transition. Of particular interest are valuation struggles between entrenched and alternative (and/or marginalized) networks of expertise, and the exploration of how to ‘value otherwise’, to make for a more ‘just’ and ‘sustainable’ energy transition.

You will work closely with the principal investigator as well as other STS-scholars in the ERC project, in addition to academic partners and industrial players in Denmark as well as abroad. As postdoctoral researcher in the Good-by-Devicing project, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Lead a historical analysis and systematic literature review of how and by whom energy islands and their technologies over time have been construed as ‘good’.
  • Participate in ethnographic fieldwork such as conducting expert interviews (e.g. with scientists and civil servants) and interviews on Bornholm to map valuation struggles, as well as participating in multi-sited ethnography in scientific laboratories and engineering ‘control-rooms’. This serves to map (mis)translation of marginalised concerns into critical valuation devices (e.g. procurement schemes, simulation tools, energy scenarios).
  • Feed in findings from the literature review and expert interviews to the work of other scientists in the ERC-project working on a scientometric analysis, which will form the basis for multi-stakeholder workshops and a digital sprint, experimenting with how to do valuations ‘differently’.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects (particularly in the course ‘Socio-technical Dimensions of Renewable Energy’), and be co-supervisor for PhD students.
  • Conduct a two-month research stay at TIK, University of Oslo.
  • Publish findings in high-ranking journals within the field.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Experience with ethnographic fieldwork is needed, as well as with conducting literature reviews.

Danish language proficiency is considered an advantage.

The ERC project will, within SMP, form part of an STS-based research group on Science, Technology Innovation (STI), with synergies to other projects being conducted. In the SMP section, we work towards a sustainable and just energy system and perform multi-disciplinary social science research in the technological, economic and societal nexus of wind energy. We use qualitative and quantitative methods, empirical data, interviews, case studies, financial modelling, socio-economic and policy analysis to study wind energy project development, environmental impacts, social interactions, markets, policy, and industry processes.
