PhD scholarship: Driver Behaviour in an International Context – DTU Management

Found in: beBee S DK - 4 weeks ago

Kongens Lyngby, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet Full time

DTU Management’s Transport Division invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the field of driver behaviour and driving culture. The successful candidate will join the Human Behaviour section and will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Felix Siebert, Assistant Professor Ravi Seshadri, and Professor Sonja Haustein.

The PhD will investigate the impact of cultural factors on driver behaviour using a combined questionnaire survey and driving simulator methodology in case-studies carried out in Denmark and India. Existing driver behaviour models will be used to explain inter-participant differences in behaviour, and models will be extended to include potential behavioural relations to differences in driving culture. In addition to simulator experiments, subjective data on driving norms, social responsibility, and adherence to driving laws will be collected in an online questionnaire survey in Denmark and India.

The project is a strategic collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and its Alliance Network partner Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). You will be based at DTU and will receive your PhD from there. You will visit IITB for a fully funded one semester research stay in Mumbai, India.

You will be a member of the Human Behaviour section at the Department for Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) at the Technical University of Denmark. You will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Felix Siebert, Professor Sonja Haustein, and Assistant Professor Ravi Seshadri (Transportation Systems Modelling section). Further supervision is provided by Professor Nagendra Rao Velaga and Professor Vedagiri Perumal from the Civil Engineering Department at IITB.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your primary tasks will be to:

Familiarize yourself with current driver behaviour models. Design experimental driving simulator studies which can be used to incorporate central variables of these models. Conduct and analyse driving simulator studies in Denmark and India (with support from IITB colleagues), which assess potential relations between driving culture and driver behaviour. Advance the state of knowledge on the impact of driving culture on driver behaviour modelling. Write academic papers aimed at high-impact journals. Participate in international conferences and workshops. Disseminate research results and support teaching as part of the overall PhD education.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

We are looking for an ambitious, self-organized individual with strong project management and communication skills. In the application you should state in which of the following areas you have experience: driver behaviour modelling, driving simulator research, cross-cultural research, survey design, data collection, and analysis. Proficient English language skills are required.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
