Job Description

A three-year PhD position is open in the Ecology group at Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The project is connected to the Horizon Europe project Arcadia entitled: Transformative climate Resilience by Nature-based solutions in the continental bio-geographical region.

The starting date is flexible, but we hope to welcome you in autumn 2024.

Description of the position
Arcadia is a European Research project with 42 partners covering regions, municipalities, companies, and research institutions. The project runs from Part of the project is to assess and implement the best rural and urban nature-based solutions, not only for climate adaptation and mitigation but as well for water quality and biodiversity. This PhD project will focus on studies concerning development, implementation, and effects of nature based solutions in freshwater systems with focus both on climate resilience, water quality and biodiversity and based on a holistic approach.
The position will be affiliated at , and the Ecology group.

About you
Highly valued qualifications for the successful candidate are: 1) experience with nature-based solutions and handling of freshwater runoff both in urban and rural areas, 2) a master degree in Biology or Environmental Technology, 3) experience with field work, laboratory work and analyzes of freshwater samples including monitoring of water/sediment quality and invertebrate fauna, 4) experience with GIS for data evaluation and analyses, 5) driver license, 6) experience and/or interest in cooperating with external partners, 7) excellent communication skills in English and Danish (written and oral) as a vital part of Arcadia is to interact, plan and perform research and tailor evidence-based scientific findings both nationally and internationally, and 8) a high level of responsibility and self-motivation.

A stimulating international and interdisciplinary work environment with research groups working with management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, climate adaptation and climate mitigation, method development and designing and planning of nature-based solutions. The Department is equipped with new and state-of-the-art laboratories and analytical devices.

Odense is the country's third largest city and is centrally located with easy commutes to Copenhagen and Aarhus (approximately 11⁄2 hour).

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
