København N, Denmark KU - SUND - PANUM KBH N Full time
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are offering a PhD fellowship in organoid development and tissue modelling commencing 1st of October 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Our group and research
The Desler Group are a newly started research group counting 10 group members. We investigate aging at the molecular level and its link to age-related diseases. This is done using 2D and advanced 3D cell culture models alongside biopsies collected from human cohorts.

Our goal is to unveil novel molecular mechanisms in aging, discover robust biomarkers for age-related diseases, and identify potential therapeutic targets.

This PhD project is part of an EU Horizon funded highly interdisciplinary and multifaceted research project between 10 different groups across Europe and lead by the Desler Group.

Project description

In this project we aim to understand and explain the mechanistic link between the post-acute phase (PAP) of COVID-19 and risk of noncommunicable diseases.

More specifically, we aim to determine the clinical and biological mechanisms behind the increased risk of reduced organ function in pulmonary, cardiovascular, and renal systems associated with the PAP of COVID-19.

Your primary research area will be to generate, assess and use induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived organoids to support the project.

You will optimize the protocols for kidney and lung organoid generation and use this model system to assess novel immune factors in blood samples from human controls and patients suffering from COVID.

Using both 2D and 3D representative model systems, you will, in collaboration with other group members assess viability, fibrosis, senescence load, bioenergetic changes and morphologic changes.

Principal supervisor is Associate Professor Claus Desler, Department of Biomedical Sciences,

Start: 1st of October 2024

Duration: 3 years as a PhD student

Job description
