Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

Tenue track in Ecological modelling of coastal ecosystems. We invite you to apply for a position focusing on development and applications of advanced process-based models for coastal ecosystem research, conservation and management.
Are you passionate about marine ecology and eager to make a tangible impact on management and restoration of coastal ecosystems? We are seeking a dedicated and innovative researcher in Ecological Modelling to join our team. If you have a strong background in ecological modelling with a focus on coastal ecosystems, pressure-impact relationships, and aquatic nature restoration, we have a lot of exiting challenges for you to engage in.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the departments competences within ecological modelling of coastal ecosystems and advance our understanding of pressure-impact interactions (e.g. eutrophication), ecosystem and habitat dynamics e.g., in relation to marine food production and restoration of coastal ecosystems.

You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic, public and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop advanced dynamic models addressing key aspects of coastal ecosystem functioning
  • Analyze interactions between pressures, coastal habitats and environmental conditions
  • Advance our understanding of how food production incl. Low Trophic Aquaculture and coastal fisheries interacts with coastal ecosystems already affected by human pressures like eutrophication
  • Improve models, methods and decision-support tools for coastal ecosystem management and restoration
  • Predict impacts of different management strategies for coastal ecosystems under present and future conditions
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Be part of the sections team providing advice to public management and industry
  • Teach and supervise at BSc and MSc level and be co-supervisor for PhD students

We also expect that you during the tenure track period require skills in fundraising.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) preferable within aquatic ecology, ecological modelling, environmental science, engineering or similar. Specific qualifications include:

  • Experience with application and development of process-based ecological models
  • Strong skills in scientific programming (Python, R, Matlab, etc)
  • Preferable experience with model and software development
  • Experience in data analysis and statistical tools
  • Publications in high-ranking journals
  • Preferably experience with advisory work and teaching
  • Good collaboration and communication skills

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry

Section for Coastal Ecology conducts research within the ecology of the coastal zone from nutrient dynamics to fish as well as the coastal zone as a fishing ground and production area for low-trophic aquaculture. Our core research areas are aquaculture of low-trophic species i.e. bivalves and seaweed, fisheries and effects of fishery and seaweed collection in the coastal zone, marine habitats, and their importance in the coastal zone for biodiversity and fish. The results of the research are largely translated into practice through advice to public management and the industry. We have a strong national and international collaboration network of universities, research institutions, and industry.
