Student Assistant in Bioinformatics at the Danish National Genome Center

About the Danish National Genome Center
The Danish National Genome Center’s primary mission is to lay the foundation for developing better diagnostics and more targeted treatments through Whole Genome Sequencing. The Center holds a national responsibility to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure that enables the analysis of large-scale, heterogeneous biomedical data.
One of the Danish National Genome Center’s main goals is to be at the forefront of new big data solutions in the healthcare domain. We work with HPC, cloud services, networks, servers, storage, applications, users, and cross-cutting processes within a Linux software environment to support precision medicine and innovative research.
About the position
We are seeking a motivated student assistant to join our Bioinformatics Group. This position offers 15 hours per week and is ideal for students pursuing a BSc or MSc in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field. The anticipated start date is March 1st 2025.
As a student assistant, you will work on the following:
- Whole Genome Sequencing Production: Manage and oversee daily bioinformatics workflows, ensuring efficient and accurate data processing from genomic sources.
- Software Development: Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of software modules that enhance our bioinformatics pipelines.
- Module Management: Build, compile, and manage linux environment module system used in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, utilizing tools like EasyBuild to ensure seamless integration and deployment.
- Pipeline Management: Maintain nextflow based computational pipelines for the analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data from patient samples.
- Collaboration: Work closely with analysts, researchers, and other team members to translate large-scale biological data into actionable research insights.
Your day-to-day tasks will be integrated into the Section for Data Analysis and Usage, where you will be involved in national and international projects.
Professional qualifications
Educational Background: Currently enrolled in a BSc or MSc program in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field, with several years of study remaining.
Technical Skills:
- Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python and Nextflow. Experience with additional languages is a plus.
- Bioinformatics Tools: Familiarity with standard bioinformatics tools.
- Operating Systems: Comfortable working with Linux-based systems and proficient in shell scripting.
- Environment Module System: Experience with building and compiling software modules for HPC environments, including the use of environment module systems.
- Compilation Tools: Knowledge of compilation tools and processes (e.g., Make, CMake) used in the development and deployment of software on HPC systems.
- Version Control: Experience with Git version control is essential for managing code repositories and collaborating effectively within the team.
Language Skills:
- Full professional proficiency in Danish or English.
Teamwork:
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and a strong motivation to engage in an interdisciplinary environment.
Working at the Danish National Genome Center

Terms of employment
You are employed in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and the Public Employees' Organizations – the State Sector (OAO-S joint agreement) and the organizational agreement with HK/State for office workers, laboratory technicians, and IT staff (HK).
We expect you to work an average of 15 hours per week. Naturally, we are flexible during exam periods.
