With this postdoc postition at GEUS you will become part of building the Next-Generation of Automated Seismic Monitoring Pipeline for the North Sea, focusing on offshore CCS monitoring. About the position The 2-year postdoctoral position focuses on developing a unified, automated seismic data processing pipeline integrating ocean-bottom seismometers, land-based networks, and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for the North Sea region. The project aims to detect and discriminate between earthquakes and other seismic events (e.g., explosions), perform event localization and magnitude characterization, and ultimately deliver a harmonized North Sea–wide seismicity catalogue. The postdoc will also explore integration of seismic interferometry (ambient seismic noise correlation) products (seismic velocity monitoring time-series, velocity models from ambient noise tomography) into the pipeline to inform on reservoir integrity at CO₂ storage sites. The work is part of the SAFE-C project, funded by EUDP under the Clean Energy Transition Partnership, and will contribute to safeguarding offshore CO₂ storage through advanced seismic monitoring technologies. The position involves close collaboration with industrial and academic partners, including INEOS, NORDUnet, and Roskilde University in Denmark, as well as international partners across the North Sea. - Software development - SAFE-C project tasks management (in collaboration with the PI) - Scientific dissemination and report writing Who are you? You hold a PhD in seismology, geophysics, or a closely related field. You have experience in earthquake seismology, software development, and signal processing. Proficiency in coding language (preferably Python) is highly appreciated. You will join a specialised research department, where we work across functions and project based. As colleague you will experience open communication, international research environment and accountability and will fit in well if you also emphasise reliability, independence, and the ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. It is an advantage if you have experience with: - Ocean-bottom or DAS data - Using machine-learning-based pickers, denoiser and classifier You must be able to communicate effectively in English. Knowledge of Danish is not required at the start, but willingness to learn is expected. Meet your new colleagues You will join the Geophysics and Sedimentary Basins Department at GEUS in Copenhagen. The department is a leading center for geophysical research and monitoring in Denmark, working on topics such as CO₂ storage, seismic hazard, and subsurface imaging. The team combines expertise in seismology, numerical modelling, and field instrumentation. You will work closely with the Seismology group, under the guidance of Professor Aurelien Mordret, in collaboration with other departments at GEUS and partners in the SAFE-C consortium. You will have the opportunity to participate in several international conferences and workshops to disseminate and advertise your work during the project. As part of the Seismology group, we expect that you participate to a small degree in the routine tasks of the team in managing the national seismic network of Denmark and Greenland. This can take the form, for instance, of fieldwork for station installation or maintenance, routine seismic analysis to build the seismic catalogue of Denmark and Greenland, or small operational software developments.
