Postdoctoral Fellowship in Lightning Physics and Atmospheric Electricity – DTU Space
1 week ago
We seek a motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to work on our Neuro-Lightning Project funded by Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond (DFF) Sapere Aude Grant. The Neuro-Lightning Project aims to understand the inner plasma physics of lightning using the new neuromorphic imaging technique.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will participate in lightning observational campaigns at a leading lightning research facility, the Säntis Tower in Switzerland, to measure natural lightning at close range with a newly designed optical system based on the neuromorphic imaging technique. You will be responsible for leading the scientific analysis of the data with the aid of numerical modelling in collaboration with researchers in Denmark, Spain, and Switzerland.
Your key responsibilities are to:
- Work with a PhD student and our larger group to understand lightning sub-processes from observations.
- Combine radio and optical data to understand the inner plasma physics of upward lightning from the tower tip.
- Develop and improve the numerical models for studying the leader-streamer interaction.
- Explore the potential of the neuromorphic imaging technique in lightning research.
- Publish research results in high-quality scientific journals.
We seek a candidate that fulfills some of the following criteria:
- Expertise in atmospheric electricity, lightning physics, plasma physics, or related fields.
- Strong skills in programming, numerical modelling, and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent reading, writing, and communication skills in English.
- Experience with data analysis related to lightning observations with high-speed cameras, VLF magnetic/electric field antenna, lightning mapping array, and interferometer will be an advantage.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their PhD but cannot begin before having received it.
The assessment of the applicants will be assessed on a continuous basis, so please feel free to apply as soon as you are ready. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online/in-person interview.
