(Senior) Software Developer, Faculty of Humanities, University of CopenhagenThe University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Humanities, is looking for one software developer, starting as soon as possible. A new Centre for Digital and Computational Humanities has been recently established with the goal of fostering and supporting research across all the Faculty of Humanities.
The position is permanent and full time.
Job description
The new Centre for Digital and Computational Humanities serves as a hub of expertise across the Faculty of Humanities on a range of techniques including software engineering, machine learning, data science, HPC and large-scale data processing. We work in tandem with researchers from all the Faculty to push the boundaries of computational research in the Humanities. The aim of the Centre is to collaborate with other groups at the Faculty in ambitious projects with a significant computational component. Other activities include the provisioning and management of IT infrastructure, competency building, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The Centre ambitions to rapidly position itself at the forefront of the application of computational methods in the Humanities. The Centre maintains strong ties with other groups at the University, including the Center for Social Data Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Computer Science, and the Pioneer Centre for AI (
The position of software developer is open to applicants with some (Software Developer) or several years of experience (Senior Software Developer). We are looking for a full stack developer, but remain open to consider different specializations.
You will be expected to:
- Lead on the design and development of high-quality research software;
- Evaluate, monitor, and maintain applications in production;
- Autonomously coordinate your projects;
- Participate in the Centre’s relevant activities and other relevant networks;
- Contribute to the organisational and administrative work of the Centre.
You will be guaranteed that a minimum of 20% of your time will be devoted to a project of your choice, in agreement with the head of the Centre and aligned with the Centre’s goals. You will have the possibility to author in code and data releases, and academic publications.
You will work closely together in a team consisting of three full-time senior members, which is expected to grow rapidly in the forthcoming years, and develop collaborations with other groups of developers at Faculty and University level.
We are looking for a candidate with:
- Strong software development skills, including but not limited to Python;
- Strong competences in software design, documentation and release, including in open source;
- Strong competences in databases (relational, graph, vector) and data processing;
- Experience with software versioning, testing, and continuous integration;
- Experience with API development;
- Experience with containers (e.g., Docker);
- A cooperative attitude and interest in working collaboratively with other developers, researchers and external stakeholders;
- A professional command of English and good presentation skills.
We look favourably at candidates with:
- A PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Digital and Computational Humanities, or related fields;
- An interest in cultural heritage or any domain in the Humanities;
- Experience with machine-assisted software development (e.g., copilot);
- Experience with machine learning and/or data science;
- Experience with HPC and/or large-scale data processing.

Terms of appointment and payment will be according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State and is classified after qualifications as senior adviser (specialkonsulent).
