Director for our new Centre for Core Facilities at University of Copenhagen

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) at the University of Copenhagen (KU) is looking for a director for our new Centre for Core Facilities. The ambition is for the centre to be internationally recognised for having excellent research infrastructure that supports world-class research, education, and innovation, including through innovation and collaboration with researchers and instrument manufacturers, continuously developing and implementing state-of-the-art services and research infrastructure.

The centre will open in mid-2025, and the director will thus have a unique opportunity to shape its development. SUND has faculty core facilities in animal experiments, light and electron microscopy (including cryo-EM), proteomics, and preclinical MRI. These are advanced research infrastructures of significant and strategic importance, targeted at a broad range of researchers at SUND. The facilities are available on equal terms for everyone at SUND.

The centre will include all existing and future faculty core facilities at SUND, and the director will have the current leaders of the core facilities as references. The director's responsibility will largely correspond to that of a department head – including for finances and task prioritization. The director will report to the Vice Dean for Research and be part of the faculty's management team. The centre will be supported by a small secretariat, which will work closely with the Dean's office and university administration regarding the administrative support of the faculty's core facilities at SUND.

The director will be responsible for developing the coordination and coherence between the faculty core facilities, which includes establishing a common knowledge environment and guidelines for how the facilities are best utilised, coordinating activities, prioritising access to the facilities, and pricing.

One of the first tasks for the director will be, in close collaboration with the Vice Dean for Research and the core facility leaders, to clarify the centre's strategy, direction, framework, and profile. The centre will also be responsible for applying for external funding for existing and new faculty core facilities, in close dialogue with SUND's leadership, local core facilities, departments, and research centres. Additionally, the centre will support the local core facilities and qualify local applications for major research infrastructure through SUND's existing 'Working Group for Research Infrastructure'.

The director will also work to increase the visibility of the centre's facilities and services both internally at SUND and externally, including entering into strategic framework agreements with larger partners. Finally, to ensure the continuous development of the centre's services and research infrastructure, it is assumed that a homogenous governance model for the faculty core facilities will be established, ensuring close links to research through user involvement, external feedback, and evaluation.

Qualifications:
To qualify for the position as our new director, you must be an internationally recognized researcher within one of the faculty's research areas. In addition, you must have relevant management experience. SUND expects you to have visions for the development of the centre, insight into the interaction of research with the surrounding society both nationally and internationally, and understanding of the collaboration within the faculty and in relation to external parties, including foundations. As a manager, you listen, delegate, and have an engaging management style.

Application Process:
You can apply for the position via KU's website. The application deadline is March 16, 2025.

Your application must consist of:

  • Your application
  • CV
  • A statement of your vision for the upcoming Centre for Core Facilities.

Your application will be handled with confidentiality. If you have questions about the job, you are very welcome to contact the Vice Dean for Research Hans Bräuner at tel. 3533 4469 and/or Martin Isenbecker from Genitor at tel. 2565 9231 or

We want to reflect the surrounding society and encourage everyone, regardless of personal background, to apply for the position.
