PhD scholarship in Probabilistic Deep Learning for Autonomous Aerial Inspection
2 days ago
Are you experienced in deep learning, computer vision, and probabilistic modeling? Join our high-profile EU consortium for the AUTOASSESS project at DTU Electro, where we have already set new standards for aerial robotic inspection in confined, visually degraded, and GNSS-denied environments. The AUTOASSESS project develops fully autonomous solutions for challenging tasks such as inspecting dark water ballast tanks on large vessels. In this role, you will design uncertainty-aware semantic segmentation models and create curated, probabilistic annotated datasets that capture the inherent ambiguity in defect labeling. This is your chance to master cutting-edge deep learning techniques, advance active perception research, and shape the future of robust inspection systems onboard aerial robots.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your responsibilities are as follows:
- Conduct state‐of‐the‐art research and develop novel deep learning techniques for semantic segmentation and probabilistic defect detection onboard aerial drones operating in confined, GNSS‑denied environments.
- Investigate and implement uncertainty-aware models that enhance inspection reliability and robustness in challenging, visually degraded scenarios.
- Create and curate probabilistic annotated datasets to quantitatively capture and express ambiguous defect information.
- Leverage your model outputs to derive reproducible qualitative and quantitative metrics of faults and defects, integrating statistical metrics into active inspection behaviors.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team—from the AUTOASSESS project—to integrate your algorithms into a practical, next-generation aerial inspection platform.
- Design, execute, and analyze experiments to evaluate performance and identify avenues for improvement.
- Stay current with advances in computer vision, machine learning, and aerial robotics, ensuring your work reflects the latest research trends.
- Publish your findings in top-tier conferences and journals, contribute to grant proposals, and gain valuable teaching assistant experience.
Furthermore:
- You will be responsible for designing and building the perception for inspection capabilities of the next generation aerial robotics platform of the DTU team.
- You will engage in research with regards to inspection, quantification, and active perception of the platform.
- You will participate in the integration and field testing of the platform, together with our other high-profile partners of our projects, i.e: AUTOASSESS and our unannounced upcoming inspection projects.
At DTU, you will be part of a dedicated group of people led by your PhD supervisor associate professor Evangelos Boukas, Project Leader and Consortium Coordinator of AUTOASSESS. Your PhD project will result in scientific publications and experimental validation of your results. You will present at international conferences as part of your research training, and you will in addition sharpen your didactics skills through experience as teaching assistant.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Additionally, it will be an advantage to your application to have experience with some of the following:
- Prior work with probabilistic deep learning, Bayesian inference, and uncertainty quantification in computer vision.
- Experience with simulation tools, including Isaac Gym, Isaac Sim, Aerial Gym.
- Experience with ROS, and especially real-life aerial robots.
- Experience with open-source tools for deep learning, computer vision and robotics would be an advantage.
