PhD Researcher in Multiscale Mechanical Modelling of Adhesive Joints

The PhD project is part of the NextGenBlade project, a Sapere Aude project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The project aims to develop a strong and fatigue-resistant adhesive assembly concept for wind turbine blades and other large composite structures.
Research FocusThe focus of the PhD project is on the modelling of the adhesive joint, involving a multiscale model of the joint and damage mechanisms. The project will cover design, modelling, and experimental characterization of the adhesive joint.
Key Responsibilities- Develop a detailed multiscale model of fatigue-driven damage on the length scales from μm to cm
- Develop a machine learning model that mimics the effects of damage development relevant for a model on the structural scale
- Combine the machine learning model with an existing FEM-based damage prediction framework
- Collaborate with another researcher in the project on experimental characterization
- Documented skills in modelling and analysis of laminated composite materials
- Experience with machine learning and progressive damage/fracture simulation
- Good problem-solving skills and analytical mindset
- Excellent collaborative skills and ability to work independently
