Centrica Energy serves as the trading division of Centrica, engaging in the trading of electricity, natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and energy attributes. We connect producers, suppliers, and buyers in the wholesale energy markets, offering our clients optimal market access through both physical and financial settlement methods. Our team consists of over 850 professionals from more than 50 countries, spread across 8 global offices. In our Aalborg office, where this position is based, you will join a vibrant international team of over 300 dedicated Energy Movers.

The Market Risk Manager will be instrumental in overseeing and reporting on risk, while continuously enhancing the function as Centrica Energy evolves towards a multi-location trading model. This position is crucial for refining and advancing risk measurement methodologies, processes, and protocols, with daily interactions with the front office and various business units. The role reports directly to the Head of Market Risk.

This is a remarkable opportunity for a skilled and seasoned Market Risk professional to contribute to an organization focused on optimizing trading in gas, electricity, LNG, and renewables, while also acting as an intermediary between our upstream and power generation teams and our retail operations.

The role is situated in Aalborg, with occasional travel to other Centrica Energy offices anticipated every few months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee market risk for one of the energy trading desks, implementing market risk management strategies across gas, electricity, and renewables, while fostering a robust market risk presence and cultivating strong relationships within the Centrica Energy trading division.
  • Supervise 1 or 2 junior team members, encouraging risk discussions on the trading floor and promoting best practices within the team.
  • Maintain and disseminate in-depth knowledge of trading portfolios and stay updated on developments in the energy markets.
  • Conduct quantitative analyses of new transactions and identify inherent risks using simulation-based modeling and other analytical methods.
  • Collaborate with relevant business teams to develop new business and product frameworks, integrating changes into existing policies, processes, and systems.
  • Enhance market risk processes, models, and methodologies, particularly in areas such as Value at Risk (VaR) and stress testing.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive understanding of physical and financial energy market fundamentals and traded instruments, particularly in electricity and gas.
  • Expertise in risk management methodologies and techniques, including Value at Risk, stress testing, and option pricing.
  • Experience in managing junior team members.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to articulate complex transactions and provide constructive insights to the Head of Market Risk and Front Office.
  • Proficiency in booking systems such as Endur and EOS is preferred.
  • Practical experience with Power BI, Python, and SQL.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
