Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Københavns Universitet Full time

The University of Copenhagen seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to join its Faculty of Humanities. The successful candidate will contribute to the Carlsberg-funded project 'Tell Me the Truth: Fact Checkers in an Age of Epistemic Instability.'

Job Description

The Department of Communication invites applications for a postdoctoral position associated with the TMT project. As a researcher, you will investigate questions of facts and truths in public debate, focusing on journalistic fact checkers.

The TMT project is a comprehensive research endeavor that examines the establishment of facts as a fundamentally rhetorical practice. You will explore how people argue for and try to gain support for their way of understanding and conveying the truth in a challenging time for traditional authorities and institutions.

The project highlights the importance of fact checkers in the hybrid media system, where social media, algorithms, and generative AI are reshaping media and politics. Your research will focus on the role of fact checkers as integrated parts of the argumentative process over truth.

The successful candidate will suggest an independent subproject that either extends one of the existing subprojects or adds a fifth subproject. This subproject must be formulated within the framework of the overall project.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • An excellent scholar of rhetoric, media studies, or journalism studies.
  • Experience in theories relevant to the project, such as theories of public controversies and mediated political debate, knowledge claims and knowledge production, journalists, scientists, or other knowledge workers in the information ecosystem.
  • Experience in methods for collecting and analyzing material relevant to the subproject.
  • Interest in journalistic fact checking and related communication practices.
  • Ability to independently develop a subproject within the framework of the overall project.
Benefits

The University of Copenhagen offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment with opportunities for professional growth. The successful candidate will collaborate with the project leader, Associate Professor Mette Bengtsson, and the other members of the TMT project group.

The postdoc will be employed in The Section of Rhetoric with the opportunity to be part of the rhetoric research group or other relevant research groups in the department.
