The Department of Business Development and Technology at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University invites applications for a research scientist position in energy systems modelling and optimization.

Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team of experts in energy systems research. We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in mathematics and analysis to support our projects on energy systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing mathematical and computational tools for modelling power systems, as well as applying artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to optimize energy harvesting.

About the Research Projects
  • Flexibility and Stability of the Power System:
  1. This project aims to examine the security of the European transmission system through various scenarios that may lead to widespread outages or even blackouts.
  2. We will investigate how HVDC interconnections and new energy storage technologies (e.g., hydrogen) can prevent these events.
Hybrid Power Systems:
  1. This project involves technical and economic analysis of hybrid power plants combining photovoltaics, wind, hydrogen, and battery storage technologies.
  2. We will use software for real-case scenarios to evaluate the performance of these systems.
Optimization Techniques for Energy Harvesting:
  1. Our goal is to develop optimization algorithms for parameter extraction of solar modules.
  2. We will also apply artificial neural networks and/or machine learning techniques to maximize power point tracking in solar panels under different radiation and temperature conditions.
Redesigning the European Electricity Energy Market:
  1. We aim to provide accurate predictions of energy production from renewable sources using next-generation technologies, including artificial intelligence and weather-based models.
  2. We will also use AI and machine learning for accurate power load prediction.
  3. Our research will focus on finding the optimal sizing and location of energy storage technologies at national and European levels.
  4. We will investigate the implementation of energy storage technologies in the future pan-European electricity energy market.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • A PhD in energy engineering, electrical engineering, power engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • A strong background in mathematics and analysis from the PhD studies, which may be used to perform research assessments on clean energy technologies and the power system.
  • Proficiency in using MATLAB, HOMER Pro, and NEPLAN.
  • A proven track record in AI and machine learning, particularly in topics relevant to the research projects stated above.
  • Experience in developing mathematical and computational tools for modeling power systems.
  • Knowledge of the European Energy Market will be an advantage.
