Core Responsibilities

We are currently setting up a new packaging R&D test facility, scheduled to open in 2026, and you will play a key role in establishing and operationalizing the facility, material development workflow, and more.

As our Fiber-based Materials Scientist (internal title Materials Engineering Manager Specialist), you will lead R&D initiatives aimed at improving fiber-based materials. More specifically, you will:

  • Direct and design detailed material property and recyclability testing, ensuring all materials align with internal requirements and industry standards.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and multiple functional units to advance fiber-based materials for incorporation into packaging solutions.

  • Assess material performance and test data to extract insights, guiding material selection and development.

  • Lead fiber-based R&D projects, design rigorous testing protocols, evaluate material performance, and draw on industry trends to foster innovation.

  • Document and report findings to partners, influencing packaging development with clear insights and actionable recommendations.

  • Remain informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and scientific progress in material science, converting these into packaging development solutions.

  • Implement and advocate for continuous improvement processes within the material testing, lab, and material development workflow to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

You will be a member of the Sustainable Packaging Department in Billund. Our aim is to foster innovative, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions for the future, while maintaining our excellent quality and safety standards.

Working alongside a multi-functional team from R&D, Procurement, Production, and Sustainability, we develop packaging material solutions that contribute to the LEGO Group's ambitious sustainability goals

Do you have what it takes
  • Solid experience in material science or engineering, specializing in fiber-based materials, coatings, and adhesives for sustainable packaging solutions.

  • Solid experience in performing material property testing on fiber-based materials following industry standards (e.g., ISO and ASTM).

  • Demonstrated skill in examining material property test outcomes and intricate data collections, extracting insights to guide material choice and support innovation and sustainability efforts.

  • Proven experience in directing cross-functional projects, incorporating material advancements into actionable solutions, and actively collaborating with colleagues.

  • Apply a logical approach to promote transparent tradeoff decisions, validate feasibility within the LEGO Group supply chain, and involve the right collaborators.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication to address challenges and drive development.

  • Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex material science concepts effectively across diverse cultural collaborators.
