Postdoc in Enhanced Rock Weathering at Globe Institute
7 months ago
We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a three-year position to commence on 1 February 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
This position will be part of the newly formed Centre for Geo-enhancing Biological Productivity with Glacial Rock Flour. The centre aims to assess the potential to use Greenlandic glacial rock flour to enhance both agricultural and marine productivity while simultaneously sequestering CO2 through enhanced weathering. This position will be focused on quantifying carbon uptake resulting from the application of glacial rock flour to agricultural fields.
Information on the department can be found at: .
Our research
The Centre for Geo-enhancing Biological Productivity with Glacial Rock Flour is an interdisciplinary centre which allows for collaboration between its two research branches: one focused on ocean alkalinity enhancement and the other focused on enhanced weathering in agricultural environments. The agricultural section of the centre aims to quantify the impact of glacial rock flour applications on plant growth and the amount of CO2 uptake associated with this practice. In order to determine how effects vary with local environmental conditions, we are establishing an international array of field sites located in Denmark, Ghana, and Australia.
Your job
You will take a leading role in the development and implementation of field sites in Denmark, which will be specifically aimed at using precise measurements of greenhouse gas and alkalinity fluxes to quantify the climate effect of glacial rock flour applications and to ground truth simpler methods of CO2 uptake estimation that can be used by farmers to gain carbon credits. We seek a candidate with previous field experience in soil water sampling and an understanding of the carbonate system who can contribute significantly to our goal of quantifying alkalinity outputs resulting from enhanced weathering of the rock flour. You will benefit from the opportunity to work closely with and learn from experts in greenhouse gas flux measurements.
You will also have the opportunity for collaboration with international partners and involvement in other research areas according to your interests. We expect the successful candidate to cooperate on joint publications with collaborators and members our research group and contribute to publications and activities.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
Essential experience and skills:
You have a PhD in soil science, biogeochemistry, or a related field. You have expertise in soil water dynamics and experience in field sampling and measurement of soil solutions and nutrient fluxes. You have an active interest in developing nature-based solutions to the climate crisis. Good record, considering your early career stage, of peer-reviewed scientific publications Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams Excellent English skills written and spokenDesirable experience and skills:
Experience with greenhouse gas flux measurement Expertise in soil microbiology Place of employment
The place of employment is in the Section for Geobiology at Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and agricultural field sites.
Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years. The start date is 1 February 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or another relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,728 DKK / approx. 4,800 EUR (October 2022 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
