The Institute of Conservation focuses on conservation issues in its educational programmes and conducts research into the preservation of our cultural and natural heritage, which includes such subjects as materials science, methodological developments, and preventive conservation. The position

Your tasks include theoretical and practical teaching in the active and preventive conservation of works on paper at bachelor's, master's, and PhD level. You will be responsible for teaching students in the graphic conservation programme, participating in teaching our interdisciplinary courses as well as supervising and examining students. Practical experience in conservation of works on paper will be an advantage. Administrative duties are part of the position.

Teaching may be conducted in English or Danish, but we would prefer that you learn Danish within the first two years of appointment.

Your research will focus on areas within paper conservation. As a researcher, you will actively participate in the research environment of the Institute and the Royal Danish Academy, publishing, initiating, and conducting research projects, both independently and with collaboration partners.

You will be part of an academic environment of approx. 20 teaching staff and researchers and 70 students where good collegial relationships, mutual inspiration and discourse are valued. The personal qualities we are looking for include initiative, enthusiasm, and creativity as well as the ability to work to deadlines and develop didactics.

This is a permanent, full-time position with an average of 37 working hours per week including research and teaching 50/50 or 40/60. Your place of work will be the Institute of Conservation at Esplanaden, which is centrally located in the historic heart of Copenhagen.

Appointment to this position requires as a minimum, a relevant master's level degree and a PhD or scientific qualifications at PhD level. An assessment committee will assess your academic qualifications, and you will be appointed as an assistant professor or associate professor, depending on your qualifications. If you are appointed as an assistant professor, we'll offer a tenure track period not exceeding six years.

Salary and terms of employment

The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Employee and Competence Agency and organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in government service. A qualification allowance will be negotiable, depending on your skills and experience.

The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and scientific staff at the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation; Aarhus School of Architecture and Design School Kolding – Executive Order No. 1190 of 21 August 2023.

Qualifications for appointment at associate professor level

To be eligible for appointment as an associate professor, you must be able to document solid experience in and knowledge of paper conservation as well as:
Experience and professional qualifications at the level of a satisfactorily completed period as assistant professor. Having conducted international level research and having advanced or innovatively developed the subject area. Having received supervision, upgraded your teaching skills, and received a positive written assessment of your teaching qualifications. In addition, the Royal Danish Academy requires documentation for a completed and passed Danish one-year postgraduate teacher training diploma course (Pædagogikum). For applicants who do not meet this requirement the Royal Danish Academy may exceptionally dispense if your research achievements are at associate professor level, and you are deemed capable of attaining the required teaching skills within a period of no more than two years. Documented experience in planning, developing, and teaching at bachelor's and master's level will also count in the applicant's favour. You should be able to demonstrate an interest in actively contributing to research-based teaching, and a proven track record in innovative teaching will count positively in your favour in the overall assessment for the position.

As the Royal Danish Academy focuses on both internally and externally research and teaching collaborations with academic and public institutions and industry, and proven experience in developing, funding, and implementing externally funded research projects count in the applicant's favour.

You can apply for the position even if you do not yet possess these qualifications. As an assistant professor, you are offered a tenure track, where you will receive supervision and the opportunity to upgrade your teaching qualifications. At the end of the tenure track, further tenure will be conditional on having completed and passed the Danish one-year postgraduate teacher training diploma course (Pædagogikum) and your ability to attain a positive associate professor assessment.
