The Centre for Quantum Mathematics (QM) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA), SDU invites applications for a three-year PhD position with a PhD project in Functions and Geometries in Feynman Integrals and Scattering Amplitudes. The targeted starting date for the position is 1 October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
Scattering amplitudes, and in particular Feynman integrals, are key ingredients for calculating theoretical precision predictions within the hugely successful framework of Quantum Field Theory. Their applications range from particle physics at the LHC to gravitational waves from inspiraling pairs of black holes and neutron stars. These integrals involve intricate geometries, and they evaluate to novel classes of mathematical functions. The goal of the project is to develop a thorough understanding of the occurring functions, as well as new techniques that leverage this understanding to expand our calculational reach.

Candidate profile
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate within the field of theoretical or mathematical physics. Applicants should have a solid background in quantum field theory and an affinity towards mathematics. Further background in Feynman integrals and algebraic geometry is beneficial, but not mandatory.

The successful candidates will be expected to have:

An MSc degree in mathematical physics or theoretical physics – to be obtained before the start date (equivalent to a Danish master's degree), with outstanding results
Excellent writing and oral skills in English and ability to work independently.

As criteria for the assessment of your qualification's, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Research environment
The PhD project will be funded by a recently awarded Sapere Aude Starting Grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark. It will be carried out within the Centre for Quantum Mathematics (QM). QM is located at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Science on the international campus of the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark. QM is established with the ambition to create a highly international and interdisciplinary group within a broad spectrum of pure mathematics and mathematical physics.
