Do you wish to contribute to a transformative mission that blends business with societal impact? Would you like to steer an internationally acclaimed department to new heights? Are you ready to foster an inclusive and collaborative academic community?
Copenhagen Business School invites applications for the position of Head of the Department of Management, Society and Communication (MSC) commencing on 1 January 2025. We are searching for a strategic, innovative, and collaborative leader who can continue to develop the department along with CBS' strategic ambition.
The primary goal of MSC is to contribute to CBS's strategic ambition of transforming society with business. The department is committed to exploring responsible management, organisation, and governance in a globalising world. It teaches across various CBS study programmes and engages with the public and practitioners through multiple outlets and channels.
MSC's mission is to conduct research on the dynamic relationship between business and society with a focus on responsible management. The department leverages expertise from management, business disciplines, and the broader social and human sciences, organised into four major research areas:
- Communication, Organisation and Governance cluster
- Technology & Society cluster
- CBS Sustainability Centre
- Centre for Business and Development Studies
Reforms of the higher education landscape affect CBS. In the coming years, MSC will have a focus on how to contribute with teaching across CBS under new conditions. These changes also accentuate MSC's focus on recruiting, retaining and developing staff, in order to deliver high quality research-based teaching in both known and new format in the many study programmes MSC is involved in. Educating PhD students is an important part of continued academic development and MSC is committed to offering an attractive and robust PhD environment with a critical mass of students, who will part-take in either academia or practice after graduation.
As the Head of Department, you will not only lead the department but also be an important part of CBS' strategic leadership. Heads of department at CBS participate actively in shaping CBS' strategic direction and central institutional procedures and policies through regular engagement with Senior Management.
The Department comprises approximately 105 faculty members, along with 22 PhD students and 10 administrative staff. In addition, it benefits from the insights of around 100 external lecturers. The environment is truly international with representation of about 47 different nationalities, and both Danish and English are equally accepted as working languages.
Recruitment process
An appointment committee chaired by the Deputy President will review and interview a selection of qualified candidates.
One of CBS' strategic goals is the promotion of diversity, which is why a number of efforts have been made to facilitate a process that aids in reducing potential biases during recruitment. We therefore encourage applicants not to include photos in the application.
To minimize bias in the selection process applicants invited for interviews will not undergo an interview with the entire appointment committee in the first round but will be interviewed by each individual committee member through short online interviews.
Job interviews are expected to take place early October 2024 (round 1 – online) and late October 2024 (round 2 – physical). Tests will be administered between rounds 1 and 2, and interviews will be conducted in English.
Terms of employment
The employment will take place as a fixed-term employment for a period of 3-6 years with possibility for extension for up to 3 years.
The employment will be based on the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and member organisations of the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations for employees in the Danish state sector (the "AC collective agreement"), including the Circular on Protocol to the collective agreement regarding Heads of Departments and Deans at the Universities and the Circular on fixed-term employment.
The salary consists of a base salary of DKK 49,628.67 per month, a fixed-term allowance, pension contribution and possibly a qualifications-related allowance.
In relation to the remuneration of Heads of Departments, the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science has set a ceiling for the annual fixed salary, including pension contribution, at DKK 824,582 per year (salary level as of March 2012 – in the current salary level, this corresponds to DKK 1,012,641).
The salary ceiling is exclusive of the fixed-term allowance and pension contribution thereof, as well as any one-off payments.
