Postdoctoral Researcher in Epidemiology and Economics for Animal Health

Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Københavns Universitet Full time

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher or Assistant Professor to join our team at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing stochastic and spatiotemporal animal disease spread models, integrating financial and economic assessments of prevention measures to reduce pathogen introduction and transmission at farm and regional levels.

Background

The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) highlights biosecurity as a cornerstone in animal health management, disease prevention, and control. Our project, 'Enhanced and Cost-Effective Biosecurity in Livestock Production,' is financed by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe research and innovation program. This involves collaborating with an interdisciplinary and international consortium to test and develop evidence-based, cost-effective, and sustainable biosecurity management systems in current and future terrestrial livestock production chains in Denmark and the EU.

The position is announced as a Postdoctoral Researcher or Assistant Professorship in the Section for Animal Welfare and Disease Control, depending on the candidate's qualifications and preferences. Employees in this section are involved in veterinary contingency tasks, research, and capacity-building projects, working in collaboration with the primary livestock sector. These tasks and projects typically involve analyzing big and complex data, data management, risk assessment, statistical and/or simulation modeling of disease spread, impacts of mitigation measures, and associated economic evaluations.

Job Description

The successful candidate will develop quantitative risk assessment and mathematical models as tools to quantify the probability of introduction and within-farm spread of pathogens. These models will be used to estimate the impact of biosecurity measures on pathogen transmission, prioritize which biosecurity measures should be implemented, and reduce the probability of introduction and spread of pathogens at farm level. Within the epidemiological models, the cost-effectiveness of implementing critical biosecurity measures will be assessed for both endemic and epidemic/emerging infectious diseases relevant for intensive and extensive production systems.

Responsibilities

  1. Data management, including setting up data-linked models with automated methods to make data from different formats accessible.
  2. Development of software codes on GitHub to create data-linked models for risk mapping, including causal drivers for disease spread and available biosecurity datasets, along with documentation.
  3. Development of mechanistic models considering transmission dynamics of selected pathogens in space and time, understanding the impact of biosecurity practices on the introduction and spread of pathogens at farm level.
  4. Development of a financial burden estimator at the farm level.
  5. Project management, research, publication, and academic dissemination.
  6. Sharing knowledge with society.

Requirements

  • A completed PhD degree in Computer Science, Economics, Quantitative Ecology, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Statistics, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or a similar area.
  • Strong programming skills in R or other languages.
  • Experience with economics applied to health is desirable, or willingness to participate in training on economics applied to animal health.
  • Previous experience using revision control systems.
  • Good communication skills in English (both oral and written).
  • Good collaboration skills and team player abilities.

Working Conditions

The AWD Section is located on Frederiksberg Campus. Our research environment is highly international and stimulating, with frequent seminars, workshops, summer schools, and retreats with international collaborators.

Terms of Employment

The weekly working hours are on average 37 hours per week. The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of four years. The starting date is February 1, 2023, or after agreement.

Salary, pension, and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organization.
