About the Position

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is seeking a highly skilled professional to join its Weather Research Department as a Research and Development Position within Weather Radar-Based Precipitation. This is a permanent, full-time position that will play a crucial role in supporting the development and improvement of weather radar-based applications, research, and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of weather radar-based products and services, including precipitation forecasts and radar data processing.
  • Collaborate with the radar research team and IT departments to ensure seamless integration of radar data with numerical weather prediction models and hydrological forecasting systems.
  • Develop and implement new radar-based applications and services, leveraging expertise in geophysical processes, radar and remote sensing technologies, and IT development and coding.
  • Work closely with the team to ensure proper distribution of radar data, products, and services, including communication with external suppliers and partners.
  • Conduct research on the blending of radar data with point-based precipitation observations to establish real-time products and long-term decadal scale time series.
  • Document and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed scientific journals and other channels.
Requirements
  • MSc or PhD degree in a relevant field, such as earth sciences, computational science, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in a UNIX environment, with experience in languages such as Python, C, and shell scripting.
  • Experience with machine learning, high-performance computing, forecasting, and model-data integration is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
About DMI

DMI is part of the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities and is the government's climate science advisor. DMI provides meteorological services to the Danish Realm, including weather forecasts, warnings, and data. The Weather Research Department at DMI employs a staff of approximately 70 scientists and developers working closely with other research departments and meteorologists.
